It could be charger issue or battery issue.
You can try this charger here: https://chargerbuy.com/products/charger-for-hoveround-mpv5-power-chair It's UL certified.
When the red light is on it is to indicate that the charger is getting power from the wall outlet. If there is a second light that normally comes on Green when charging pay close attention to it when you first plug the charger in. See if it blinks even once then turns off. If it does that means the charger is not seeing any battery voltage at the plug that goes into the chair. If the green light does not blink at all then it usually means the charger is defective. Also most wheelchair battery chargers will not charge the batteries if the chair is to dead to even turn on.
Replace the batteries and charge before use then charge nightly for 20 days Use the chair daily so you can get a good charge nightly to get the batteries operating at 100% After the 20 days If you don't use the chair daily always store fully charged and then charge once a week overnight. Should work fine once you get the new batteries in You will need to get 2 U1 batteries for your chair do not get Wally World or automotive batteries You must replace with sealed deep cycle batteries made for power chairs Hope this helps
Angel the charger light should only turn green when the chair is fully charged. If you know the chair isn't fully charged then there is a problem with the charging system. if the circuit board in the joystick got wet then that is a serious problem. If you have a voltmeter you can check the battery voltage thru the charging port located under the front of your joystick Set the meter to 200 volts dc and plug the leads into the 2 outter holes of the charger port. Fully charged you should read 27-30 volts if you aren't getting any reading then the batteries are completly dead or there is a problem with the charging circuit (the reason you are getting a green light on the charger) The joystick will have to be replaced sorry If Medicare paid for your chair then they will pay 80% of the repair costs to get your chair working again If they did contact Roadrunner Mobility @ 1-800-467-2668 to get it fixed thru Medicare Hope this helps
Lets solve this, one question at a time ....
First your batteries are not charging,This may be because of it siting for too long without a charge. The batteries may be so dead that your charger cannot reconize them. dontlosse hope there are ways to check your batteries and charger with out spending alot of money on a tech coming over.
1) Unplug and remove your batteries from the chair
2) Find your self a charge that trickle charge
(Note: If you have a batterie charger ,trickle charge is the lowest set charge)
3) Trickle charge each batterie to about 50%
4) Install batteries back on to chair
5) Plug in chair charger
The chairs charger should come on ,and that right there tells you that you have a good charger!
The batteries that came with this chair are not bad and are considered ok to use .These type of batteries are what you call maintenancebatteries ,which your always having to check if the leaking or need water. The gell type batteries are what they call non-maintenance.That you dont have to always look after but are more money.Thats why they recommend the gells so that the user doesn't have to work on there chair.
If you plug the charger into the wall, turn on the power switch and the light comes on, the charger should be working properly. Here is a way to test it-
Attach the charger that came with the power chair to the power chair controller firmly and turn the power chair on, while the charger is running. What should happen:the lights on the controller will scroll back and forth. If this does NOT happen and you can confirm the charger is turned on, the charger handle is fully seated inside the controller receptacle and the wall outlet has power, then the charger may have a problem and needs to be replaced.
If the charger is OK, then there may be a problem with the batteries. Here are some sypmtoms:
1-You connect the charger but the light on the charger never goes red, it just stays green.
2-You connect the charger but the light goes from red to green VERY fast.
3-The charger light goes from red to green but when you disconnect the charger and press the power button on the controller, you only have one flashing red light, or the batteries drain within just a few minutes of use.
4-The power chair has been stored or sitting idle for several months.
5- The power chair has been connected to the charger 24-7 for several months.
Any of the above examples indicates that the batteries are oxidized or damaged and will most likely need to be replaced. The MPV5 takes two, U1 12 volt 33 amp batteries which can be purchased at any battery warehouse store like Interstate Batteries or Batteries Plus.
Good luck!
sounds like a charger inhibit problem. Whenever you charge your chair the charger inhibit shuts down the chair so it can't be moved while charging. If you are getting this then that function is not working. Lets try this if you know of someone who has a chair or scooter with an off-board charger see if you can borrow it. Plug the off-board charger into the charger port located under the front of the joystick (don't have the on-board charger plugged in) and then turn the charger on. turn the chair's power on and you hopefully will see the lights blinking again indicating a charger plugged in (charger inhibit) the lights on the charger should be red and yellow (yellow turning green when fully charged) If you still get the problem with the off-board charger then your problem is in the controller or power module and this requires a new one. If Medicare paid for your chair you can call Repair Xpress @ 1-877-81-3733 or Roadrunner Mobility @ 1-800-467-2668 to have them fix it for you and bill Medicare for most of the repair costs. Hope this helps you
Does all your lights on the joystick come on after charging? If you can have someone look behind your chair while still plugged in for charging, the green light on the charger will be lit if the batteries are fully charged. They will have to kneel and look under the shroud to locate the charger they will see the light if it is on. Also check the meter on the rear of the chair the meter should read zero when the chair is plugged in and fully charged. I fyour chrger is working then if the chair does not stay with power for what was normal then new batteries are probably needed
If you have an off-board charger that plugs into the joystick there are two lights on the charger one red(power on) and the other yellow (turns green when fully charged). Plug it into the chair and if the light is green then you have fully charged the batteries. Now if you have the on-board charger the charger meter on the rear of the chair will resd zero when fully charged. Hope this helps ya
