SOURCE: Is there a way to put the deflector shield in an

Find a bungee cord at walmart, this is a heavy stretchable cord with metal hooks on the end.
drill a hole through the outside edge of the shield.
when you are not mowing, put one of the hooks through the drilled hole and wrap the other end of the bungee cord around the grip handle or the steering wheel.
do not hang the bungee cord anywhere on the mower when it is in use as you will somehow turn it into a hurtling projectile of death or injury
there you go!

I need to installhow to install a new deflector on Craftsman mower model 917273130?

Very simple. The 6 inch or so pin that holds it on is retained by a clip on one end. To remove clip use a pair of pliers. If you work steadily and carefully you will be able to reuse this clip. After removing clip, pull the pin out. Old deflector and spring be removed now. To get the spring right you have to try it in position before installing it. Just remember that the spring is holding the deflector down so when you are done installing, when you pick up on the deflector there is pressure holding it down. Don't put the pin clip on until you verify the spring force is correct because getting that spring clip off is the Hardesty pay off the job.

I'm trying to replace the deflector shield on my craftsman LT1000 riding mower. I have purchased the shield but the rod that holds it on ( which is on the mower) is capped at both ends not allowing them to...

You don't. One one those caps must be removed. Don't lose it as you need to put it back on provided you don't destroy it. It pressed on so will need to be knocked off using a spanner and a hammer. Also after you remove the rod that spring will be hard to get back into position.

Install a deflector shield on a Sears 54" mower deck

Whats the question? If you are removing and replacing the deflector, there is two to four bolts holding it on the tractor. I'am not for sure, about the amount of bolts holding the deflector on. I don't know what model # ,you have. If by chance, you have a grass catcher installed,it will have to be removed,to get access to the bolts. Once again,i don't know the model if you can have to jack up the tractor or not, even after putting the mover up to the highest setting. This is about all i know,at this point. Hope what i suggested to you, helps. Sincerely,Brad Locke DTD. 12/03/15

How spring goes on deflector shield

Please wear eye protection for your safety before performing this task since there is a spring that is under load! Take a pair of side cutters and cut the one way lock washer located on the font side of the shaft. (Facing Towards Front of Tractor). It should be black in color. Take a pair of pliers or vise-grips and pull and twist the rear part of the shaft that goes through the plastic deflector and work the plastic deflector up and down while you work the shaft out. As you're working the deflector shaft out, take caution as the spring will pop out of place. To install new deflector, place spring between plastic deflector and align it up to the hinge openings on the deck. Make sure the "L" tab is inserted in the open slot of the plastic deflector. Tilt the plastic deflector towards the back side and start to insert the deflector shaft from the back and wedge it in about close to half way in. Take the front part of the spring that has the rubber tab (to protect deck paint) and twist it counter clockwise so the rubber tab is pointing towards the left side of the deck. Push down on the plastic deflector assembly and continue to work the deflector shaft all the way through to the font hinge opening. Once the shaft has passed all the way through the hinge opening, take a 9mm or 10mm deep well quarter inch socket and tap the new one way lock washer that can be purchased at your local hardware or Home Depot location. Use a soft mallet hammer to do this so you won't damage the chrome finish on the socket. Good Luck and Let Me Know How it Turns Out.

How do I install the deflector shield on a Craftsman riding mower, model # 917.288031?

Hi and welcome to FicYa, I am Kelly.

You will need to make sure that you have items 21 - 29 of this diagram: Scroll way down 75% until you see the deck and belt, then look at item 27 the deflector shield.
http://www.hammerwall.com/Manuals/Craftsman/Description/917.288031/Craftsman%20Lawn%20Tractor%2017.5%20HP%2042%20Inch%20Mower%206%20Speed/L0807249/

It is a matter of sliding the bolt throught bracket on the mower deck and making sure that the shield safety switch is actuated. (Flip up)

I also read the owner's manual (no help!). The only thing about the shield is on page 14 stating to make sure it is in place.

If your missing the hardware to install the deflector shield you can go to http:www.searspartsdirect.com and enter your model number in the search bar. You have to choose model search then click (go).
You will get this diagram if you choose mower deck:
