Why does my breaker keep flipping off on my water heater?

Was working fine for the past year, then all of a sudden we had no hot water. checked the breaker, and it was flipped. flipped it back to on, and shortly after it flipped again. tried it several more times, and it flipped the whole trailer i live in. flipped everything back, and still the hot water heater will not stay on, the breaker keeps flipping. Any idea's. Thanks

SOURCE: Rheem RTG 53 PVN with fault codes C4 or C7

I had the same problem with my tankless waterheater (flashing c4 76 alternately). I called Rheem
tech support and they had me 1 power down the remotepanel 2 unplug the unit from the wall 3 remove the cover 4 remove the wires for the remote panel from the circuit board and pull the twisted pair that goes to the remote out from the bottom of the unit. 5 reinstall the cover 6 plug the unit back
into the wall and turn on the hot water see if it works. It did in my case and they are sending me a new remote panel. I hope it helps.........

SOURCE: I am having the same problem as posted by jek01 on

Remove power source from the unit. If remote control2.gif is installed; remove cover and lift the control wires on the terminal...can be accomplished from either end.

Restore power and see if unit functions normally.

Contact Paloma/Rheem customer (800-432-8373) support and notify them IF you are getting a code "76" error. Rheem has recently extended the warranty on the "Burner Control Assm."; which is your problem. The C4-C8 portion of the error code, is where the unit stops the ignition process...burner fails to light, or gives you intermittent hot water. In either case, contact customer support2.gif.

If this helps, please indicate so.

Hi , when a breaker trips immediately, that can indicate a problem in the circuit. But the circuit stays on for a bit , then trips, so there is a problem with the heater. Could be that a thermoastat or heating element is shorted out. You can replace these items yourself, I would check the heat element first. Or there may be some corosion residue around the heater terminals.

SOURCE: Hello, I have a Rheem 81V52D 50 gal. residential

It's probably bad upper or lower thermostat.
BUT... new element could also be shorted.
OR ... original tank is rated 1500 watt elements look at label on side of tank.
I always replace both thermostats to save time.
Lower thermostat costs $10 at Lowes.

Richmond hot water heater

Turn off the power at the fuse box (circuit Breaker Box) relative to the Water Heater. Allow for a few minutes rest and flip the breaker back on again. Go to the Heater and check it again. If it works ok, you good to go. If the same problem exists, then the controller board to the heater is either defective or the limiting switch has been compromised. Before getting a professional to test it, contact Richmond directly and see if they have a fix.

Truma hot water system keeps flicking the circit breaker please help

If this has worked in the past check all the electrical connections and be sure they are tight. You might consider changing the breaker as excess trips tends to lower the trip point. Check the heating elements and be sure they are isolated from ground if not replace them.

I have to flip the breaker to the water heater to take hot showers

You need to get the landlord to fix that issue. It sounds like an internal short in the heater.

We have a new Rheem 30 gal short water heater. It only seems to put out about 10 gallons of hot water before it starts going cold, any suggestions......

I am assuming that everything was fine and then all of the sudden available hot water usage time dropped.

On a dual heating element hot water heater it can be

1. Internal tank loaded with sediment (drain and purge from lower garden hose fitting)

2. Thermostat or element problem with ONE of the 2 heaters. (Trouble shoot element thermostat)

3. Check Circuit breaker for partial trip of the breaker.

Circuit breaker trips on electric hot water heater circuit

Check the voltage at the water heater. Sounds like the element is burnt out and is tripping the breaker.

If it is more then 5 years old I would check.install a new heating element.

Water not getting hot / Kenmore Economizer 6 / Electric

Did you check to make sure that the breaker is good on the unit? Check to make sure you are getting voltage. If not, check to make sure that the thermostat located in behind the panel on the heater is getting voltage and also sending voltage to the elements. If the elements are getting voltage but aren't heating, the element(s) is bad.
