After I ran my anti-virus on my Toshiba laptop while my external drive attached, the files on the external drive disappear. I tried the external drive on my other Mac. Desktop computer and find the files all there and ok. I did try again on the Toshiba laptop PC and still no files were shown. Please help me with my problem?
What have you done to this Seagate external hard drive since then? Have you tried to check how it shows on your PC? Is it in RAW file system? If so, the easiest way for you is to format this external drive to make it workable on your laptop. But, before the formatting process, you are supposed to extract all important data inside out in case of data loss troubles. But, if you do format this drive to fix its problems or remove virus-infection issues, also go apply external drive format recovery software to take chances.
Hope these words can help you out.
You maybe removed the driver for the hard drive when you ran the anti virus. Those programs can do some strange things. If you click on the start, then computer. It will show all hard drives on your system. If you cannot find your files. I would think your computer does not see the external hard drive. To reinstall the driver, you would need to go to the driver's manufactures web site to down load or yours may have came with a disk. If so just run the disk. Could do a system restore , but that would be last option .

You have not yet formatted the drive to work with you MAC. You will need to use your MAC's Disk Utility to format the drive in order to write to the drive, but be aware that formatting will erase everything already on the external drive, so back up anything on the drive you want to keep first.

Whether your computer is a laptop or desktop does not inherently decide if the drive will work or not. If it can't see the connection, there must be another problem with the drive. I would suggest reporting what you have done to try and make it work and anything you notice out of the ordinary (how lights on the drive are acting, noises the drive is making, alerts you see when you plug it into your laptop, etc). That will allow us to better help you find a solution to the problem.

Ok,
Sounds like it's one of three things then
Disk trouble from unplugging the usb while the unit is still "running" and not yet finalized. Running CHKDSK /? /F in the run box where ? = extrenal drives lettrer. Then restart the computer(done from windows PC with drive attached)
Shell trouble I have already advised a dozen or so people this week that if CHKDSK doesn't work, replace the shell with a new one and see if the hard drive works in the new shell.
Failed harddrive, of course this is always an option. If neither of the above suggestions works then it's possible the hdd has failed and you may need to send it to a pro if you have any files on it that need retreiving.
Hope this helps FixYa, if you need additional help just reply to this by adding a comment.

Thanks for your responses...
I've pretty much decided that it must be a hardware problem within the harddrive itself...Can anyone lead me in the right direction to maybe take out the harddrive to put into another external shell in order to hopefully recover my data? Again I'm using a Seagate Freeagent Desktop 500GB external harddrive.

the problem is that your western digital operates using the NTFS (New Technology File System) which is the standard file system of Windows. Apple macs is not interopable with native NTFS therefore you need to install a read-write NTFS file-system driver on your mac.
an excellent free mac NTFS driver can be found here-
http://mac.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/NTFS-3G.shtml
download and install the software then restart your mac.
