Dynamo MartinLogan Subwoofer Speaker Logo
Anonymous Posted on Jun 30, 2009

Bought a used Martin Logan Dynamo subwoofer a couple days ago and have a very loud hum when the ac cord is plugged in, even if the speaker is not connected to an audio source. The "hum" can be heard in any room in the house, even with doors closed. Also, setting the standby/auto/on switch to auto or standby does not turn the power or the hum off. Now the strange part. Attach speaker cables and sens a signal to the Dynamo and it sounds great. Terrific bass and no hum at all, even during change between CD tracks. So the systems works perfectly if I power up the amp, then the sub, but hums loaudly if the sub comes on before the amp. Even with the Dynamo switch in auto. It doesn't seem it can be a ground problem, since the speaker doesn't have a grounded connector in the cord socket. What is wrong with this thing?

Do they share the same power source, surge, outlet?

Yes. Neither the amp or the sub have grounded power cords.

I have discovered the ML Dynamo takes about 30 minutes to switch to standby in auto mode.

With speaker level inputs connected to the Onkyo A807 amp, both units powered from the same wall outlet, Dynamo sub on Auto, the sub hums for about half an hour after the Onkyo is switched off, then the sub goes quiet. Not so good.

I connected a bonding wire between the two units on 3_7_09. If I smoked some old audio gear I could just look at that as an opportunity, right?

Works fine. Now I have the ML powered from the wall and working normally.

Are the sub and receiver in seperate locations in the room? Do they share the same power source, surge, outlet? If plugged in to different outlets, move the sub to the same power source as the receiver.
The ground leg of the outlet you are useing could be bad or circuits phased together.
The hum is a ground issue as the problem is resolved when it is connected to the receiver, thus being grounded.

Klh powered subwoofer model ASW10-120B... when you plug in to power... it makes a loud buzzing/humming noise

I would check the caps on the power supply. They are rather large electrolytic capacitors that will look like they burst and/or leaking. When these die, the caps ground and the sub will make a loud buzzing sound. If you are handy with a soldering iron you can replace them yourself. Replace them with the same voltage or a little bigger and same with the size.

If the cap. says 16v 4700pF on it, for example, a 20v 5300pF or a 16v 6200mF cap. will work for this application.

My powered sub is humming

Does the humming go away if the cable is plugged in but you wiggle it? May be a bad connection on the input jack.

Have an older (6 + Yrs) VX-10A model, that's worked fine up until now. I recently moved, hooked up the same stereo and surround sound speakers, which worked fine, but the subwoofer made a loud hum as...

Disconnect the input and see if it hums in the absence of an audio source. A bad audio cable shield or unwisely-routed audio cables will allow entrance of unwanted signals from external power sources, magnetic fields, even dimmer-controlled track lights. Sometimes, simply reversing the orientation of the ac power plug can eliminate humming.

I own a used Martin Logan Dynamo (older series) and just today found out there is no sound coming out/no led light (at the back) either. I opened up the back and saw the 110V power is getting in but no...

Did you get the sub fixed? I know someone with the same problem - won't turn on, fuse is fine. May be due to different underlying problem, but wondered if you discovered what it was and if you got it fixed.

Humming sound in subwoofer after it's been playing for a while

It sounds like you are describing an earth loop problem. I won't go into detail in this post, but try an isolation test first. disconnect everything from the reciever except the sub and try connecting say a BATTERY powered mp3 player or cd player to minimise connections to the electrical mains earth. you could also isolate things by taking your sub to a friend's house and trying it on their system.
If it is an earth loop use a process of elimination to find out which two pieces of equipment causes the earth loop. then apply filtering.
you can buy earth loop isolation transformers for about AU$26 and I've used one on my sub myself. Theyhave RCA (phono)plugs on each end and they connect inline with the signal cable to the sub amp.

as for the thumping sound it might be the speaker protection circuitry cutting off the amp to protect the subwoofer speaker from damaged. This might be triggered if the earth loop sound is causing the sub amp to overload and clip.

Failing this there might be a dried out overheated electro capacitor in the amp circuit causing the hum. Hav a chat to your local electronics person, who should be able to spot it!
Hope this puts you on the right track
Happy Hunting!

Sunfire Subwoofer 110 Noise on input plugin

A few more questions-
Does the sub hum without anything plugged into it except for power? If it makes a real loud hum almost a squeal then I think the rca cable between the receiver and the sub is dead shorted and needs to be replaced. If it's more of a low level hum, then it's a ground hum caused by many things, ie........the receiver and the sub being on different power circuits in the house.......sometimes diconnecting the cable tv feed as it enters the room while the sub is connected and humming to see if it stops........the easy fix sometimes is using a 3 to 2 prong ac adapter but lifting the ground on such a powerful amp could be a fire hazard.

Interference and noise

there is nothing you can do about it, your sub probley has a built in amplifier right? the only thing you can do is live with it, like most things they normally have a little fcc sticker that states "this device must accept any interference received, including interference that cause undesired operation".
