I have a 1993 400sel that runs on 4 cylinders only

The firing order is:

1-2-7-3-4-5-6-8

From the left (front) bank of cylinders are number 2-4-6-8 and the right (rear) bank cylinders are 1-3-5-7. Engine firing order is 1-2-7-3-4-5-6-8.

Sounds like a mixup in the firing order-Assuming the engine ran OK before the plugs were changed.

Ford 302 V8 firing order is 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8 Distributor rotates counterclockwise (CCW) Cylinders 1-4 is on passenger side (front to back) Cylinders 5-8 is on driver side (front to back)

Firing order 1-2-3-4-5-6 ------- front | 1 3 5 | of | | vehicle | 2 4 6 | ------- distributorless ignition NOTE THIS IS FOR THE 3.6L
