First disconnect the battery. Then unhook the wires from the starter should be one or two wires. Remove the bolts from the starter two or three bolts.

SOURCE: starts and runs great(when engine is

I would check the gas cap. If the gas cap is plugged or pieces missing from inside it will not allow air into the tank and the fuel will not flow properly to the carburetor. Just loosen the cap and try it, if it does not change check for dirt in the fuel line.

I have a Toro Workman 2100 with a 16hp briggs & stratton, turned off one day would not start the next eventually got it started but backfiring through carby

The B&S Vangaurd engine requires periodic valve lash adjustment (100 hrs by schedule). Overdue valve lash adjustment typically manifests with starter stall (starter engages, rotates engine, hesitates or stalls, and then spins/starts).

The starter on the 12res Kohler generator just hums (spinning sound). It doesn't engage the flywheel. Do I need a new starter?

OC is over crank failed to start. It will normally try 3 times before giving this error. You need to disconnect the battery and remove the starter motor, make sure it is free to move / spin. Either the starter has seized or the engine has siezed. Make sure the engine is free to rotate also, once you remove the starter you will see the engine flywheel there, removing the spark plugs will make it easier to rotate the engine. I would guess it is more the starter.

Toro timecutter starter

I think this is going to be like an automotive starter.
You will need to check 3 things.
The ring gear where the starter gear cranks the engine, the starter gear that engages the ring gear, and the overrunning clutch or bendix , which is the springy part that kicks the drive gear into the ring gear.
When you remove the starter from the engine, you will see the drive gear on the end of the starter that was inside the motor.
The drive gear is about the diameter of a half dollar or a silver dollar. it should not be chewed up, it should look like a good gear. Inside the place where the starter attaches, you should see a ring gear, with a flashlight, and those teeth should look good and not chewed up.
On the starter you removed, behind the drive gear and usually inside the starter is the bendix or overrunning clutch , which will push the drive gear into the ring gear when you crank the starter. These parts often fail every few years.
Some people fix them, most people replace the whole starter.
Be blessed.

With Kawasaki engine, the starter motor spins, does not engage

The way them starters work is it is either engaged by a silonoid or a reverse plastic gear so when the starter is energized the gear comes up so. In other words u can buy a new starter or take it to a shop and have them rebuild it. If it is the plastic gear kind u can geta new gear for it
