I have replaced the waste toner tank, but the "Waste toner tank full/Not installed" message won't clear. I did open the left door where the toner cartridges are located (to a 90-degree angle and then closed the door securely). The message still won't clear.
I had the same problem with my printer. On the back of the waste toner cartridge is a tab that sticks out. A photoelectric shine thru this tab to let you know when the cartridge is full. My photoelectric had gone out and was giving the same error message. I took my printer apart and cut the wires loose on each side of the photoelectric and shorted them together to complete the circuit. The only problem in doing this is you have to occasionally check the waste toner cartridge yourself to make sure it does not overfill.
To check the LED function as follows:
1) remove the waste container
2) flip the black mechanical sensor up into expose the LED emitter and sensor. If the LED is operational the error message disappears and the On Line/Continue light turns green. To validate the test place a finger or other opaque object in the path of the LED. The error message reappears and the On Line/Continue light turns orange(ish).
Swabbing the section of the waster contain where the LED passes thru fixes the problem for me also. Thanks unclDLights.
Here is what worked for me: empty the container fully, then rinse with water a few times. Add dishwashing liquid soap (cuts grease and such), cover the two wholes with the green covers provided. They don't appear to serve any other purpose...
Rinse all the soap until all bubbles run out. Dry (paper towel), until completely dry. Meanwhile go to the printer and blow (canned air or a good lung full with eyes closed) into the two circular spots where toner empties into container.
Open doors as indicated before, close all doors and Voila! You just saved $50+.
There is a small tab on the tank that appears to push a small black proctective cover away from the photoelectric eye when the tank is inserted (is that what ColtSecurity was refering to?). In my case, the sensor was not bad (yet). What fixed it for me was to take slightly damp tissue wrapped around a curved wire and use it to clean the residual toner dust off the inside surfaces of the proturding window on the tank that the photosensor "looks through".

FYI - this is a Samsung CLP-500N color printer
"Waste toner tank full" indicator remains on after tankd emptied, and even after cleaning tab window.
CLP500 started saying full Waste Contained before Container was 1/2 full.
new Contained said full before 1/10 full.
so all parts of CLP500 were, brushed, blowed, washed, wacuumed still gives error. extra including Waste Toner area and tubes.
for CLP500, on the Waste Toner Container, i cut/removed a plastic triangle where between LED readers, covered it up with tape so no toner leak.
now i have to watch waste toner volume.
now no error.
