The main board to your TV should be checked. Contact any service technician. Faults occurred due to lightning is not predictable to any body. In most cases, the main board might need replacement. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. Pull up older posts. Surf the site with patience. Do a search by type in the brand name of your device at its search box and press "Enter".

SOURCE: My KDL-52Z5100 has just died.

The surge could easily come in through the antenna wire to the the TV.
Did you try unplugging it for about an hour to let it reset itself?
If it still does not work, then you will need to do in-depth troubleshooting, starting at the power supply module first.
Please read my guides to get more understanding how the TV works.

SOURCE: we had a lightning strike

The only fix is to replace the panel and that would not be cost effective. It would be cheaper to buy a new TV.

Hi,

please switch outlets and attempt to turn the tv on. If this does not work, please schedule an in-home diagnosis from a company like Home Depot or Geeksquad. They might use a multimeter to check current flow through some of the tv circuits to determine whether the power outage damaged any of them.

Thank you.

Television power board replaced and TV still not powering up?

Any television subjected to a power surge of 125k volts is likely to be a total loss The power would have bridged through the PSU to every other component. This tip I wrote explains the problems of home television repair, even on a set not subject to a lightning strike.

When and How Should a Surge Protector Be Used on a Fixed Switch?

Common Causes of Lightning Strikes
  • Outdoor network cables or power cables are routed overhead.
  • A switch is deployed outdoors but is not properly grounded.

Damages of Lightning Strikes
  • If power cables of a switch are routed overhead in an outdoor environment, lightning strikes may burn the power supplies.
  • If network cables of a switch are routed overhead in an outdoor environment, lightning strikes may burn interfaces of the switch.
When a switch undergoes lightning strikes, overvoltage is induced by lightning on network cables and transmitted to interior of the chassis. The surge protection measures, such as lightning rod and chassis grounding cannot prevent the damage. Therefore, surge protectors or surge protection circuits are recommended.

Surge Protector Use Precautions Take the following precautions to protect a switch from lightning:
  • Ensure that the ground cable is connected to a ground bar or a ground point on the cabinet.
  • Avoid routing cables overhead in an outdoor environment. Bury cables underground or route them in steel tubes.
  • To protect network interfaces against lightning, use 8-line surge protectors (or Huawei certified 4-line surge protectors).
  • When installing a network interface surge protector, connect the IN end to terminals and the OUT end to network interfaces of the switch.
If a fixed switch is installed in a network box, follow these instructions:
  • Connect the ground cables of the switch and surge protectors to the ground bar in the network box.
  • The maximum length of a ground cable cannot exceed 40 cm, and a length of smaller than 15 cm is recommended.
  • If the network box is located outdoors and power cables are routed aerially over a long distance (more than 300 m) to the network box, it is recommended that you install a power supply surge protector in the network box. The decoupled power cable must be at least 3 m long

Will a nearby lightning strike cause a power board failure?

It could happen yes it would depend where the strike entered the TV. Not all lighting strikes hit on the electrical lines, on a TV they can come through the cable, as well as a antenna if you have one hooked up.

Our electricity went out for a few minutes, and since then the TV will not turn on. The green light is flashing. We tried resetting it by pushing a pen point into the reset hole, but it does nothing. ...

Your power outage may have been caused by a nearby lightning strike, or any number of
1000 different reasons that cause power surges, brown-outs, voltage spikes, inductive loading,
and/or utility pole breaker trips and resets (this accounts for your power loss (a pole breaker trip),
followed by restoration of power (the pole breaker automatically reset) - even plain old high electrical demand causing an overload due to air conditioning demands caused by hot weather.
When the pole breaker reset, your TV caught a power surge.
Whenever a power outage occurs, quickly power off (or better, unplug) any/all computers, TVs,
etc. that are not protected by surge-protection.
As an electrician, when someone loses an item of electronics concommitant to an electrical
anomaly, its almost
always traceable to a nearby lightning strike (or the power company provided equivalent), accompanied by inadequate surge protection for
the VCR/TV/Computer/Stereo/uninsured valuable electronic item/XBOX 360/Nintendo Wii.
Surge protection can
be provided by the consumer at the power strip (a good one with builtin MOV protection and a
warranty costs $20, whereas a zero-protection 4-outlet or 6-outlet power strip will cost $4-$5).
Your electrician can provide whole-house surge protection where a whole-house MOV-based (metal oxide varistor) surge protector, or per-circuit protection can be installed with
a GFCI breaker (or better, an AFCI breaker) can be installed.
GFCI = ground fault circuit interruptor
AFCI = Arc fault circuit interruptor
Lightning protection is especially important in Florida, which is the "lightning capital of the world."
I've never found a good solution to lightning-fried electronics (random power supply components are destroyed and/or fuse blown), other than renters insurance or homeowners insurance.

Your only real hope for an economical fix is to look for a blown fuse, and replace it.

If desperate to attempt a fix on your own, you could try replacing the entire TV power supply as a module, but even this provides
no guarantee of a fix - lightning damage can extend beyond the power supply.
When traveling, I will always unplug everything before I leave (except the security system),
and also turn off the breakers to unneeded house circuits (which kills the wall switches that
control interior lighting - forcing a burglar to use their flashlight instead of interior lighting)
which is the least convenient lightning protection, but highly effective, and cheap (free).

Lightning strike, power was out for no longer than a second and came back on - only TV has been effected and will not respond by remote or tv button. Shows it is on. But only getting fast clicking noise...

Hi Johnson,

Only 50% chance that the symptoms was caused by a lightning strike because your cable box was powering on fine. Most of the cases when lightning strike near to your area, possible of multiple damaged to the electronic device not only to one particular appliances, most especially if they are plugged into the outlet. Also, fuse will blew because of excessive voltage.

I've suspected that the symptoms was only a co-incidence of lightning strike. If you can hear the clicking of the relay, this is only means that the standby power supply is working fine. However, this board has multiple output voltage feeding the other boards to function well. This kind of symptoms is a power supply related problem.

If you have necessary tools and test instrument and handy with electronics, you can troubleshoot this board to find the faulty parts like open fusible resistors, shorted transistors/IC's, leaky electrolytic capacitor, etc.
Another option is to replace the entire power supply board, this is more convenient if you are going to DIY because no soldering required. Try to find you board HERE. Type the model no. of your unit to the search engine, available parts/board will be display.

Hope I helped you.
Have a nice day!
Thanks for using Fixya.

Killed by lightning, have power, no picture...

The warranty does not cover lightning, check if your insurance covers it.
A lightning strike on such panel ( HDMI ) is very difficult to repair and if not impossible. The HDMI connector is hooked to the ground of the TV set so everything could be damaged.
My advice is not to repair.

Lightning strike came in via cable not power.

Your tv is going to need internal repairs. I recommend using our premium service to help walk you through these repairs. Or contact a local repair service.

To avoid this in the future I recommend an inline surge protector or a "green" switch.

An inline surge protector makes sure that all power to your tv comes through at the same level and does not spike or fall. It has a battery backup as well.

A green switch is a way of rewiring your home or your entertainment center to allow you to disconnect all power to your entertainment center when you are away, when a storm is coming, or when you are simply not using the system. A remot control can restore the power.

The average home entertainment center has one of the highest drains on electricity in the average home for appliances that are not in use. that is what makes the green switch appealing.

We had a lightning strike in the area with resultant power outage. The set top box is not working and doesn't respond to switching off and or removing plugs from wall for over 5 mins. The LED display...

Lightning is an indiscriminate killer of electronic equipment it can attack multiple areas of electronic circuits. set top boxes are for the most part a computer and data is collected thru an antenna and transmitted back to your set. lightning can enter the box in multiple ways thru the antenna or the AC or both. It would not be worth persueing a repair on this just replace it. if you had other equipment damage then check with your home owners policy for the replacement of all the equipment damaged.
