Depending on which generation it is, and ios, you can search Youtube for how to do it. Some videos only show how to access pictures, though.

Hi, he may have to do a factory reset. or try holding down the power button till he sees the apple sign. Wait about 5 minutes and then power it back on, it may reset itself.
The only way to unlock the iPod touch is to do a full wipe/recovery in iTunes. Reboot the iPod into recovery recovery mode by plugging it into the computer, hold both power and home buttons until the iPod turns off, then keep holding the home button but let go of power until iTunes says it detected an iPod in recovery mode. Use iTunes to restore the iPod and set it up.

Using the Restore function for your iPod touch is part of standard troubleshooting procedure. Restoring your device will erase all data from your iPod touch, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, calendar information, and any other data. All iPod touch settings are restored to their factory condition.
Whenever you restore your iPod touch, Apple highly recommends that you perform a sync prior to restoring in order to back up any changes since your last sync. If you have movie rentals on the device, see this document before restoring.
Use the following steps to restore your iPod touch:
Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes installed and running before attempting to update.
Connect your iPod touch to your computer.
Select your iPod touch when it appears in iTunes under Devices.
Select the Summary tab.
Select the Restore option.
When prompted to back up your iPod touch's settings before restoring, select the Back Up option. If have just backed up the device, it is not necessary to create another.
Select the Restore option when iTunes prompts you (As long as you've backed up your device, you should not have to worry about restoring your iPod touch).
Once the restore process has completed the iPod touch restarts and displays the Apple logo while starting up

here's how to enable it.
1. Turn on your iPod (in my case it would only get as far as displaying the Apple logo
2. Hold the power and home buttons down (the iPod will power off after 10 seconds, but keep holding those buttons down)
3. After the iPod powers off, release the power button (but keep holding the home button down)
4. After a couple more seconds, you should hear that magical “ding dong” that means the iPod is coming back alive, and that Windows has detected it. You may even see a little “New hardware” popup in Windows. It is now safe to release the home button, and your iPod is in DFU mode.
5. Now iTunes will see it as a DFU’ed iPod and should ask you to automatically restore its firmware.
6. iTunes has to download the new firmware, and it takes a while, so go make a sandwich.

I'm afraid the only way to to reset the Ipod using Itunes. Holding both the sleep button, and home button together for more that 25seconds will put the Ipod into recovery mode which will then enable you to reset it.
If it is you Ipod, with your music on then doing a restore from Itunes won't delete anything, it will simply re-sync it.
