Will not sew on knit fabrics
Check that you are using a ballpoint needle, designed for knits. Also, be sure that the thread is not 100% cotton thread.
You really do need the ballpoint needle for sewing on knits. Also, use the built in stretch stitches on your machine. I would also switch to a 60 or 90 wt bobbin thread....you can get this thread at your Brother dealer, or at Walmart. Joann's also carries it. Brand is not important...you want a bobbin thread. The 50 wt usually used for wovens is too heavy for bobbin use in our machines.

if thread is good quality you may have a sharp groove in your needle plate hole from needle breakage. if so, polish with emery tape.

Your bobbin is probably too loose. When you set a new bobbin, stop every now and then and try with your fingers nail if it's nice and tight enough. Not extremely tight, but tight, not loose and moves easily when you set your finger between the threads.
With most fabrics (99%) the plate is fine at the the top position, just with very thick and "fragile" (satins etc) you might need to adjust it.
Settings: Tightest tension for the thinnest materials, more loose for the thicker ones, better have a test piece, it rarely goes under 5 anyway.

try to rethread the machine all the way back to the spool of thread and check the top and bottom tensions on scrap of same fabric

When putting your shirring elastic on the bobbin, don't thread the elastic through the bobbin holder,adjust the stitch length longer,and loosen the tension, other wise if you want to put it through the bobbin holder you have to loosen the tension screw on the bobbin holder, and then you have to adjust it back for ordinary sewing,

Mine was doing the same thing, it wasn't threading right. The thing that pulls the thread down to the needle was out of place, and it wasn't wrapping the thread around the tension. Hope this helps!
