How do I go about changing it out
A transfer case is sometimes external to the transmission in an all-wheel drive vehicle. Typically, the front wheels are driven directly by the transmsission but the rear wheels are driven by the transfer case, which is mounted to the transmission. The transfer case will be connected to the drive shaft that connects to the differential at the rear wheels. It should be obvious how to remove and replace it once you understand where it is located.
Generally, just unbolt it from the transmission and lower it down with the drive shaft still attached. The drive shaft will easily pull out, and that's fine, but oil inside the transfer case will leak out if you are not prepared.
I have experience with other vehicles but noe with Mercedes. The principles are the same, however.
