No, purchase 2 x 512MB sticks of ram as the machine does not support 1 gig in 1 slot.

SOURCE: What is the maximum amount of ram that it can the

The manufacturer's web-site:

http://esupport.sony.com/CA/perl/model-documents.pl?mdl=VGNNS160DW

is totally non-helpful.

If you have the 32-bit version of Windows Vista, then the maximum supported by Vista is 3GB.

If you have the 64-bit version of Windows Vista, then the maximum supported could possibly be larger.

But, of course, the motherboard would have to support more than 2GB.

Best advice: take the computer to a computer-store, get them to install more DDR2 RAM, and see if the computer will recognize all of the RAM.

What type of RAM is used, and how to up grade

Hi,

The type of ram used is PC3200 DDR SDRAM. The maximum ram supported is 2GB

There are 2 slots on the motherboard each supporting 1 x 1GB (gigabyte) each.

If you want to upgrade to the maximum amount of ram then you must buy 2 x 1GB PC3200 DDR SDRAM.

To upgrade the ram take the side panel off the computer and remove the existing ram from the motherboard like in this picture.>>>

leecom72_4.jpg

All you have to do is remove the ram and insert your new ram. Make sure that you clean the the slots of any dust as the dust can cause boot issues.

Good luck.

Is there anything you need to do before or after upgrading your memory card in an hp laptop

If this in reference to the Ram Memory module/s, the answer is No.

Things to know about upgrading Ram Memory in a computer.
A) What is the Maximum TOTAL Amount for the computer. (Motherboard)
B) What is the Maximum Amount for EACH ram slot.
C) What Type of Ram Memory does the computer support. (Motherboard)
D) What frequency rate of Ram Memory does the computer support. (Slang for Frequency Rate is 'Speed')

If you have the correct Ram Memory, and are only installing 1 Ram Memory module, be sure to install it in Slot 1. (Also referred to as DIMM 1)

This is the Ram Memory slot the Processor reads first.

If I knew what HP laptop computer this was, such as the Product Number, and I knew what Ram Memory you are installing, I could help you further.

On the bottom of the laptop is a white Service Tag.
P/N = Product Number
(S/N = Serial Number. Do Not give this out online, except to HP Support)

If your problem does not regard Ram Memory, please disregard this solution.

I want to upgrade my memory on my Pavilion 513n,

FixYa is a product support website, and as such we do not delve into manufacturing. No we cannot supply ram memory.

I can supply you with the solution to your questions, however.

This is HP Support, and the main page for the Pavilion 513n Desktop PC,

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?product=90384&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&submit.y=5&submit.x=6&lang=en&cc=us

If you click on > Product information > Product specifications > HP Pavilion 513n Desktop PC Product Specifications,
you can view,

A) What type of ram memory the computer uses,
B) How much is the Maximum Total Amount for the computer,
C) How much is the Maximum Amount for EACH ram slot,
D) How many ram slots

Look under the Memory heading.
A) What type of ram memory
Type - DDR
It's DDR Sdram

Speed - PC1600/PC2100
Tells you either PC1600 can be used, or PC2100.

PC1600 is DDR Sdram that operates at 200MHz.
PC2100 is DDR Sdram that operates at 266MHz.

{To expound:
Ram memory operates at a Frequency Rate. Slang for frequency rate is 'Speed'.
Mega = approximately 1 Million
Hertz stands for Cycles per Second
Example: PC2100 is DDR Sdram that operates at 266 Million Cycles per Second }

B) What is the Maximum Total Amount for the computer. (Motherboard)
According to HP it is 1GB.

{Maximum - 1GB (2 X 512) HP recommended maximum}

I believe this to be wrong. The Total Maximum Amount is 2GB.
1GB per ram slot.

I base this upon using the memory configurator's of several websites, that sell ram memory for the Pavilion 513n desktop computer, and looking at what the motherboard chipset for the Pavilion 513n will support.

The motherboard chipset is the Intel 845GL.
This chart found on Wikipedia, states what the Intel 845GL chipset will support,

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_chipsets#Pentium_4_Chipsets

As you can see reading across from the 845GL subheading, and looking under > Max.memory, 2GB is listed.

Sources for online memory configurators,
1) Crucial.com
2) Tigerdirect.com
3) Newegg.com
4) Memory4less.net

In this case,
C) Maximum Amount for EACH ram slot is 1GB.

D) There are Two ram slots. {Proper speak for ram Slot is ram Bank}

Kingston is a good brand for economical ram memory.
So is Ultra.

An easy way to find out what type of ram memory you need, and how much is the Maximum Total Amount, as well as the Maximum Amount for Each ram slot, is to use an automatic scanner from a website that sells ram memory.

The above four websites listed, are but a small handful of the total websites online that offer an automatic scan.
Let's use Crucial.com for an example.

On the main page,

http://www.crucial.com/

,you will see - Scan My System, in blue.
Simply click on it to run an automatic scan of your computers hardware.
Doesn't look at your personal effects, just the hardware of your computer.

After the scan is done, you will be presented with the ram memory info you need.
Several options of ram memory are presented for you to choose from.

After I upgraded RAM from 512 MB to 2 G, my computer can not resume from stand by mode.

1.Do you know what the Maximum TOTAL Amount is for your ram?
2.Do you know what the Maximum Amount is for EACH ram slot?
3.What is the computer manufacturers name, model name, and model number?
(Example: Compaq Presario SR1110NX.
Compaq: Computer manufacturers name
Presario: Model Name
SR1110NX: Model Number

(Not trying to insult your intelligence with Number 3 above)

Reason for asking Number 3?
Let's take an example. Let's say your computer has a Maximum Total Amount for ram memory, that is 2GB.
EACH ram slot's Maximum Amount is 1GB, and you have two ram slots.
If you install a single stick of 2GB ram in Slot 1, chances are it isn't going to work.

If I know what computer you're referring to here, then I can give more of an exacting solution.
