Assuming you are using brother genuine toner, the next thing I would look at is the Drum cartridge. The drum is the part of the cartidge when removing the toner.you should see a blue tab on the drum, Try moving the blue tab side to side a few times to clean the charge wire.

If that clears it up or improves the quilty of the prints than you probably have a bad toner. If it doesn't get any better then you probably are going to need to replace the fuser.

It is probably the toner cartridge, not the drum. I suggest swapping in old toner cartridges and drums to nail down the problem. I keep at least one old toner and one old drum for that purpose. By the way I just bought a toner cart from monoprice.com. It will not last as long as a Brother cart, but costs very little.

SOURCE: MFC440CN PRINTING - ALL BLACK

I understand that the machine is printing only in BK. You have lost color.

If so, do run the cleaning cycles several times and run quality check test prints after each cycle.

There should be color again.

Otherwise the ph is defective!

SOURCE: Only black prints

It will only get worse. Do a google search and you will find out the print head is defective. After a multitude of complains, Brother has a more reliable print head for a fix. I'm not fixing mine. I've already invested too much in ink because of the auto cleaning it is programmed to perform.
A built in print head vs. a printer that has the ink tank and print head combined sounds like a good idea. The ink tanks are cheaper because they don't have the electronics built in and you only replace one color at a time. The problem is the print head clogs after several ink tanks have gone through them. Now, instead of paying $40 for a new ink cartridge with built in print head, you are paying for the ink that is wasted by all the required automatic cleanings, and eventually taking the printer to the repair shop for a new print head (parts and labor average $150) that may fail at any time.
My advice is to avoid any further headaches and buy a HP. Don't rely on good reviews, Consumer Reports rated this model a best buy.

SOURCE: My Brother Printer (model MFC-290c) and ink

On your printer take a look on the "ink management button"press it then look for cleaning using the arrows up and down then press ok or set or what ever the command the printer will display just try to perform head cleaning.try for several times lets say 4x don't clean too much it might ruin all other color if it has no changes try to bring it to a service center, they can soak it to a chemical solution, the head is clog.

SOURCE: Printer prints 3 large ink blotches on long side

you may insist to clean the drum part. Your problem is in that area. Or try to change the drum unit with another one from the other printer if you have one. You can use an vacuum cleaner to absorb the toner inside the corona part. You should be careful at the corona wire.

Heavy black stripe on back side of every printed page

This is probably due to miss alignment, there is an option of test page which will be scanned to allign the cartridge, if ur's a all in one printer. This test page is printed at the first time and scanned instantly for first time operation.

ADJUST THE COLOR AND PRINT SPEED You may need to adjust the color and print speed. CHECK THE LEVEL OF INK IN THE PRINT CARTRIDGES 1 From the Finder desktop, double-click the Lexmark X5400 Series folder. 2 Double-click the Lexmark X5400 Series Utility icon. 3 From the Maintenance tab, check the ink levels of the cartridges. Printing misaligned color blotches, little squares off to the

Are you using genuine inks or compatibles/refills? Have you cleaned / aligned the print heads recently? Does it only happen on the second print? Could be a case of excess ink getting onto the rollers which then get hot and deposit the ink on the next paper coming through.
Also make sure you've selected the correct paper type before printing.

The printed pages have pink blotches on the right hand side of the paper and horizontal pink blotches down the page

Try cleaning the color or magenta cartridge with rubbing alcohol and look inside the printer to see if there's pooled ink anywhere that is smearing on the paper. Try replacing the print head or cartridge.

Leaking black ink on printed pages

Hi, please attempt to run a numerous blank paper through the printer. This will dry or clean any ink found on the rollers.
Continue to run blank pages through the printer until no more ink is found on the paper, then attempt printing. If ink stains or streaks are still present, the printer may need service.
