Hi Anonymous, I want to help you with your question, but I need more information from you. Can you please add details in the comment box? Is the nut that holds the element in place cracked, broken or missing?

SOURCE: how to fix leaking heating element

Switch off the m/c. Remove the heater and clean the gasket seating area. Replace the gasket. If new gasket not available, clean the old gasket free from oil.

Apply rubber solution on both the ends metal parts. Allow it to dry. Now attach the heater along with gasket. Use after few hours.

If I suddenly have no hot water and the lower element on my electric tank suddenly has a very minor leak coming from the element, could the two be related?

You should have about 10-16 ohms on the element screw head. Also check from one screw head to the tank body, there should be no short there. A leak there on the lower element tells me that it's your problem. I JUST changed an element yesterday that ohmed out at 14 ohms, and showed no short to the tank body. But I had 240 volts on the element when power was on. I changed the element and it fixed the problem.

I seem to have a leak at the rim of my water heater where the screws attach to the cover, can this be fixed or do I need to replace it?

Water heaters are sealed tanks. The only places where water would normally be able to leak would be:
  1. Water inlet
  2. Water Outlet
  3. Heating elements
  4. pressure release valve
  5. drain valve
Leaking at the base is indicative of a rusted-out tank. But before you trash the old one, secure power and remove the side covers where the heating elements are installed to verify they are not leaking. If they are OK, the unit probably needs replacing. And even more likely if the unit is more than 10-12 years old. Don't delay on this as leaks from rusty tanks can blow out and cause serious water damage,

It is not a refridgerator, it's a hot water heater!

The element is right behind that panel, sounds like that is whats leaking. The elements just screw in or have a plate that compresses againt the element and gasket. Either way sound like a simple fix be carefull those wires are 240 volts most of the time inless its a small water heater.
Lowes has the elements just shut off the power and drain the heater before you start. If its an older heater it will be rusted any may not come out, just be ready to a buy new heater if you cant remove the element and damage the heater due to all the rust. Good luck

The house is on a basement so the idea of it leaking in the slab is probably not it. Does the water heater elements use the full 4500 watts while it is running?

Yes each water heater element consumes 4500watts at all times.
Wattage of element is printed on end of each element, and also shows on label on side of tank.
Both elements are not turned ON at same time.

I have a Rheem electric water heater that is leaking from the panel is it replaceable or is it just the tank?

If this is electric heater, do not touch unless electricity is OFF.
Turn off power and open panel to see if element is leaking.
If element is leaking, then replace element.

My water heater is leaking cold water from the bottom. How do I fix it? its a Richmond miser. Model # 8v30-1

First shut off power then remove acess cover and carefully move insulation out of the way so you can see around elements.Check to see if leak is coming from around element. If it is determine what type of element you have. Either screw in or bolted in. Both have thick rubber gaskets that can be replaced by draing water heater and removing element then install new gasket and reinstall element.
To drain heater shut off valve on incoming cold water supply line ,make sure electric power is off. Connect drain hose to drain valve and put other end to floor drain or sump basin. You can open faucet on hot side near by to prevent vacumn and drain. If you have screw in type disconnect wires, marking them for reattachment, then use large open end wrench or pipe wrench on hex section of element and turn to left to remove. If you have bolt in element spray bolts with wd-40 or similar and carefully loosen bolts then disconnect wires and remove element.install new gasket and reverse to reinstall. I would recommend that you replace elements at this time if you are sure this was the source of the leak.
If you don't think it's leaking around elements then check fitting on both water lines to water heater to be sure they are not leaking and seeping down thru insulation and leaking out of the bottom of heater. Next check around drain valve for leak and if it's leaking you can try tightening it a little or replace it with 3/4 x2 brass nipple and 3/4 inch female iron pipe boiler drain. Use teflon tape or pipe joint compound on all threaded connections.
After you have eliminated all other sources for leak then it is probably the tank itself. If it is less then six years old the tank should still be covered under warrenty. Most warrenties will give you a new heater but installation will not be covered unless you have extended service coverage.
I hope this helps you some. Thank you
