How do you reformat hard drive to factory settings. currently partitioned. no longer want partitions. it is an hp500B mt #XZ776UT#ABA
To return your HD to the factory settings do a full system recovery using the recovery disks (CD or DVDs) you made when you first had the computer. This will return the whole computer to its as-shipped state: you will lose all your data and any software that you have installed. This will retain/re-install the original partition structure on your hard disk. To do this process you may also use the recovery partition on the hard disk.
To completely reformat the hard disk, in which case you will lose everything on it
press the start button at the bottom left of screen,
R-click on computer, and select manage. The computer management window will open. From the left pane click on disk management under 'storage'. A new pane will open, with information on the different disks in your computer. Select the disk on which the partition to be formatted is located. R-click on the partition to be formatted, and choose format, and ten work through the format wizard. (see http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/create-format-hard-disk-partition#create-format-hard-disk-partition=windows-7)
When you R-click on the partition other options will appear will appear as well as format, choose the appropriate option to create a new partition, merge, etc, By successively working your working your way through the partitions you may format/merge some while retaining others.

OK is it a brand built PC (ie. DELL, IBM)???
If so, the partition with the Vista backup.... is this the factory backup that came with the PC?
If so you should be able to access it somehow through the factory Setup/BIOS screen. There should be maybe an option to RESTORE to factory settings or something?

#1: Shut down your computer. You must first shut your computer down to
initiate the factory restore.
#2: Start up your computer and as the computer logo appears (such as Dell or
HP) hit "Ctrl>F11" simultaneously. This may be different for
different machines, but the most common keys to hit are
"Ctrl>F11." If this does not work, the F8 key has been said to
work for certain machines.
#3: Select "Repair My Computer" from the list of menu options that
appear and press "Enter."
#4: Choose the language settings that you would like and then click enter.
#5: Enter the administrator log in and password if it asks you for this
information.
#6: Choose the factory reset option. This should reset your computer to the
factory settings when you bought your machine.
