Personally, I run Motul 5100 15w50. This is a synthetic blend. They also make 3000 (regular oil) and 7100 (full synthetic). My GSXR has 80,000 miles on it so I run the thicker oil but 10w40 is also available.
Any engine can use synthetic oil. I would reccomend using a popular brand like castrol syntec that you can find anywhere. Also you need to make sure that you never go back to using regular oil. It's synthetic or nothing!
Oil preference is very much a subject for debate, but any 10W40 v-twin motorcycle oil will do fine. If using anything not spcific to motorcycles, make sure that it does NOT have the "energy saving" logo in the rating mark; this can cause clutch slippage. I have used Rotella diesel oil for most of my C50's 34K miles- Irecently switched from the synthetic 15W30 to the dino 10W40 because of concerns as to the weight in hot weather, so if you are in a cooler climate, the synthetic may just be the ticket for you. Volume is 3.6 quarts when changing with the filter.
I just had my factory maintenance done on my volvo and the mechanic really likes the total (german) brand synthetic. he likes it better than castrol syntec
either this or use any brand name full synthetic.
I used 5w30 because I do not expect to be driving in temperatures above 86F in the next 5000 miles
You can use either a full synthetic blend oil 5W30 or 5W40, and even a semi synthetic blend oil 10W40.
If you have the last invoice for service , it should state which grade of oil was used, or you can check under the bonnet to see if they put a service sticker or tag , showing which oil they used.
Hope this helps
Synthetic blend lubricant with high thermal stability,

4-stroke motorcycle engines.
Excellent starting and lubrication in cold conditions due to its low viscosity.
Meets JASO MA API SJ requirements.
Its fine to change your oil with synthetic, Just be sure that you use synthetic from now on... I don't think its advisable to switch back to regular oil after using synthetic.
