It should be used with caution on a hound. Some breeds are overly sensitive to the ****, and can lapse into coma or die. The usual dose for heartworm is safe, 6 ug per kg body weight, but the much higher doses used for mange are likely to be toxic in certain pooches. See here

According to PetMD: " less than three ounces (or 88 ml) of antifreeze is sufficient to poison a medium-sized dog. Antifreeze poisoning affects the brain, liver, and kidneys." This is why it can also cause seizures.
