20+ yr old Patton fan was working fine. Turned it off to listen to something outside. Wouldn't turn back on. No strange sounds or smells. Doesn't work on any setting. Any ideas what might have failed? Is it worth getting an older quality fan fixed or am I better off buying a new lower quality one? I can replace switches and easy stuff myself but no experience fixing motor parts.

If you are up to disassembling your motor, you will find a thermal cutout near the windings which frequently fails open. Replacements are readily available, or just jumper it out. If the bearings are shot or the windings burned you're out of luck. Trust me, a new motor will cost more than a whole new fan.

If you know how (and have the tools;PULLER,nut drivers, slotted and phillips screw driver, hammer, deep socket set, dikes, vise, work bench, and some high temp bearring grease) to take things appart in general, you should be able to disassemble the fan motor and either pull bearings off shaft and replace or repack w/high temp grease if not sealed bearrings. If cannot aquire a puller for removal then attempt to blow all dirt/dust off bearring and try thumbing some motor oil (or vegetable oil if no motor oil available) while turning bearing on shaft back and forth till bearrings free up.Then reassemble electric fan motor reverse disassembly(be sure to keep parts staged as they come off for reassembly in area off the work area) "NOT" over oiling the bearrings into electrical/copper areas.

Before you replace it, try oiling it -- look at the little oil hole on the back of the motor housing. Or try taking it apart and cleaning it, then oiling.
Did it work before, but gradually slowed down and then refused to start? See other threads on this topic for that fan model.
