I show your car uses 8 “AA” batteries, 6- or 7-cell NiCd or NiMH battery. Radio Shack or The Shack will have a replacement and the store people should be able to guide you to the correct plug and polarity. NiCD and NiMH batteries are easy to work with, buy, replace and charge. If you use 8 AA batteries, that is 8 X 1.5 (volts) = 12 Volts DC. NiCD and NiMH style batteries should deliver about the same but dont expect to get performance from a NiCad battery as they dont offer enough power.
Try to program the speed controller, or re-program. Make sure your wire into the receiver is facing the correct direction, and make sure you have a charged battery.
I believe that reverse is operated by a brake band. So it seems to be stuck. It is operated by a piston, and the seal could have swelled and caused too much friction. But you could loosen up the adjustor so that it is disengaged, in order to get forward gears again. Perhaps you can force the piston to retract as well, once you drop the pan again.
