Is your Viscount an older metal mechanical machine? If so, it could be seizing because it needs cleaning and oiling If it is a computerized machine, do NOT follow these oiling instructions!!
In most cases Laurie, with decorative stitches selected some machines can't sew in reverse. Your stitch length is too long or too short to make the decorative stitches sew correctly. So many things could be wrong. I'd need more info to get you going again.
here is a link for a janome manual, it should have oiling information in it,, if there is no oiling information in the manual, then go to the janome website and contact their customer service and ask them if the machine is a self oiling or not http://www.sewingpartsonline.com/instruction-book-janome-and-newhome-9000.aspx
