without knowing age of unit, I suggest replacing the motor. Sounds like the armature is worn the bearings and is moving inside the windings of the motor. I would do that first before moving forward with any other repairs.

if the noise goes down when you cover the hole, the problem is that the vacuum hose or that side of the machine is blocked
that is less load for the motor and so it goes faster
blocking the hole prevents air out and so the motor slows down
the same effect as if you put you hand over the hose , the motor speeds up

well the spinning mode engages the transmission, the clutch and if direct drive the motor coupler, may be u have a clutch going out or slipping and thus the sound but what kind of sound is it? oh if its belt drive they can make weird noises too.

Most of the used mechanical part of a vehicle make sound!! but when the sound are weird, your car may have a damage in the crankshaft metal, or on the flywhell, some teeth are bad,
If the sound is at the beginning of the crank are the flywhell or the starter motor teeth.
But if the sound is at the runing time are the crankshaft metals...
some little pieces around the supports of the crankshaft
Hurry up to service, the engine need fixed in both cases, flywhell or crankshaft are vitaly to operate.

Sounds like the plastics are just rubbing from vibration. redistribute the contents of the drawer and see what that does. Good Luck.

If the motor sounds scratchy and is making a burning smell, or sparking you will need to replace the motor or the entire vac. Carbon brushes will rarely fix this as it is a high RPM motor

i'm thinking a pipe not a stud.... metal will expand more

check your brake pads and rotors.make sure your pad arent completely worn out and scratching the surface of the rotors.

Sounds like a bad motor. A DIY job of about 3 hours and $125.00 for a new motor.

Dryers are pretty easy to work on if you have some tech ability and some common sense.

my fist place to look would be at the brakes. second would be wheel brg and then i would look at the cv joints
