My Sears 3/4 HP garage door opener opens the door about 1', then will not go past this point. It will close it as well. I have taken the door off the chain and the chain will run without the door attached. I am unable to lift the door up (almost as if it is "stuck". I have inspected the door and the track and there does not seem to be any obvious "kinks" anywhere along the track (door is not bent, track is not bent, etc). Any thoughts?

Barb:

Many of these doors require a coiled spring either overhead or off to the sides that assist in lifting the door. If the overhead coil has come undone or broken you and the electric lift motor cannot lift that much weight. If the springs are in good working order and adjusted right, then the door is just balanced so that a small lift by the person or the electric opener will easily open the door. Bear in mind that for a person to lift the door, you first have to disengage the pull lock that couples the door to the motor chain. If you have done this and cannot lift the door, then the helper springs are the problem.

1. disconnect the door from the chain. 2. inspect the door again, try oiling the rollers and joints. It is the chain that lifts the door. Try manually lifting the door. If it still does not lift open, it is the door and not the Opener unit. 3. Although you don't see kinks, look for any obstructions eg. the track. 4. Make sure the track has not lossened out at any point. 5 If you can lift the door,. connect with the chain. Goog luck. Basically I think it is the door mechanism that has some how misalligned.

Thats one of the symptoms of a lightning strike or a power surge. Without actually being there I would suggest replacing the back-board. But as with lightning strikes and power surges sometimes other electronic components could have been damaged as well.

SOURCE: Garage door shakes as if off balance when closing

  • The garage door may be out of balance or a spring may be broken. Close the door and use the emergency release handle to disconnect the trolley. Open and close the door manually. A properly balanced door should stay at any point of travel while being supported entirely by it's spring(s). If it does not, disconnect the garage door opener and call a garage door professional. Do not increase force to operate the garage door opener.

SOURCE: Garage door opener won't open or close door

The drive gear is stripped. Remove the cover and you can see it just in front of the motor. It is white nylon and the part number is 41A2817. Available from Sears or any good door opener service company. It will come with instructions.

Most likely your door sensors are out of alignment. Make sure they are pointed directly at one another.

HAVE A 1/3 HP CRAFTSMEN OPENER THAT WILL OPEN WITH THE REMOTE BUT NOT CLOSE MUST HOLD THE HARD WIRE BUTTON TO CLOSE. GREEN LIGHT IS FLASHING.

If the main light flashes 10 times and the door reverses to the open position you have a door sensor problem. Make sure they are pointed at one another and the small lights on each one is lit and not flickering. Tweak them to see if you can get the lights on. If not you have a sensor that has failed.

My liftmaster 2265 1/2 hp remote does not close

If the door starts to close and the main light flashes 10 times and the door reverses to the open position it is a problem with the door sensors. Make sure they are pointed at one another and they each have a small light that must be on and not flickering.

If it starts to close but reverses and the main light does not flash 10 times it is possibly the RPM sensor which is a small printed circuit board just in front of the motor.

I have a craftsman garage door opener (1/2 hp) won't close proper

Check your door sensors. They have probably been bumped. Tweak them until they are pointed at one another and the small light on each one is lit and not blinking.

Garage Door won't close

It sounds like the door sensors have been bumped or somehow gotten misaligned. Tweak them until the light on each one is lit and not blinking. They must be pointed at one another.

If you can press and hold the wall button and the door will go down, you have a photo eye issue. Check the photo eyes at the bottom of the door.
