the coin cell battery new is installed. first
the power on mobo, no pci/agp cards.
USE REAR VGA PORT TO MONITOR and usb keyboard.,
power on and./ go to bios.
key (may fail if caps lock set wrong)
or this (control + Alt + del) read page 40
see bios page 1
page 1 right pane, click load optimized defaults
set time and date
set boot device in boot order page
exit save key now
now PC can boot to things listed in boot order bios
1 floppy
2: hdd
3: cd
boot from other device (enabled)
next it boot priority page. IDE , or usb etc.
save all changes and exit.

17 YEAR BEEPS OUCH HARD TO FIND.

Beeping indicates that something on the circuit board is not working. On desktops beeping with no boot means your mobo is fried. And you'll need an expert to repair it, usually the vendor.

I have a problem that looks like this one.

At boot up, after the POST, each time the HDD led blinks, the laptop produces a loud "beep", and refuses to boot, as if this phenomenon prevented the HDD to be read.

If I press the power button, it stops beeping. When I release it, it starts beeping again.

If I press F8 at the beginning and then ask for a normal boot, It boots normally. Anyway, in windows, I have some strange activity, like I would continually pressing Alt+Tab. If I press Esc, it stops immediately and then all seems to work fine.

Any clue?

Beeps and blinking lights tell the technician what is wrong with the computer. Count the beeps and the pattern of the beeps (3 long beeps, 1 long beep followed by 2 short beeps, etc).

Most times it's something related to the motherboard such as memory or video card.

Did you see anything post on the screen during the boot process?

Check your memory.

Remove the Power Cord, Open the Case and remove one of thememory chips. Set the chip aside then try rebooting the computer. If it boots, then you know the memory chip you set aside is bad so mark an x onit with an ink pen. If it fails to boot then move the chip to the nextmemory slot and try rebooting. If it fails take the chip out and set itaside, then put the other chip in and try booting it in both slots. If itboots, just to verify that the chip set aside is bad, mark an x on it and putit into the open memory chip slot and try booting.

What is the pattern of the long beeps? one long beep or two long beeps, three long beeps?

Beeping sounds when you try to boot up? Is your system booting up all the way? Beep sounds help the technician isolate the problem with your computer booting. Beep sounds normally indicate a problem with the memory, cpu, keyboard, fan, motherboard, etc. The number of beeps can be looked up based on the motherboard brand or bios and it will tell what the problem is.

If it beeps and not boot then it is the post routine telling you there is a problem. The post routine is run when you turn the power on to ensure the computer hardware is ok to run. The manufacturer of the bios routine can tell what is wrong by the type, number and duration of the beeps. Look up the code meanings and it will indicate the problem. If this sounds like nonsense to you then give the make and model of your machine and what the beeps sound like. ( beep beep beep delay beep beep beep) etc. and I'll look it up for you.

One beep is normal during the boot process.
