I just bought a Nikon D40. The monitor shuts off after being on for only 5 secs. I Have tried changing out the battery with a fully charged one and the problem persists. Is there a way to set the duration of the monitor being on? Is there some sort of power saver option? Thanx Skip B

Yes , it is a power saver. I remember there being a way to change it in the menus. Note: the "monitor" stays on for different times depending on mode. There is a manual on line. I had better luck just playing with the menus. The menu your looking for is easily over looked.

Nikon D40 green light flashing even when off

Sorry to hear this. Dropping something on concrete creates a high G force. Can you make sure the battery is fully charged before you put it in. If you have a good battery and all it does is blink something must have been broken. I think a D40 is a rather old camera too. Sorry I do not think I can help you. In most times a LED green blinking means it is charging. When carrying a camera you should wrap the strap around your wrist. If you do it correctly if you drop your camera it will not hit the ground. It is best to keep it from dropping on the ground.

Nikon D 40 flash pops up but does not flash.

Is the flash on Off mode? Is the battery fully charged? If not, charge the battery and try again.

My nikon D40 says my battery is dead

For the price of a battery, I would replace it. There are plenty of good quality chipped aftermarket batteries for the D40 for only a few dollars.

Nikon D40 Error Message

Get the kit changed. That should not happen right out of the box, but make double sure the next time around, you charge the battery completely before using it the first time. Not doing this can cause problems.

Nikon D40

Is the battery charged fully?

There is a setting in the menus of most Nikon SLR for how long it takes to turn off the meter and for the rear screen. There is also a setting for turning off the auto review feature that makes the captured image appear.

I hope you aren't hoping to see the picture on the LCD before you take the picture. DSLRs don't do this unless they have the "live view" feature.
