If its the 5050c - the tension needs to be loser than 5 as you are making large stiches. so less than 5 - I laways experiment on a double sided piece of cotton as a bench mark..... to understand the process on your large dial before finishig on the actual garment. If its the 5050c - the tension needs to be loser than 5 as you are making large stiches. so less than 5 - I laways experiment on a double sided piece of cotton as a bench mark..... to understand the process on your large dial before finishig on the actual garment.

try this take machine oil and oil eerier where the buttons that
changes for different stiches, then set the machine for straight
stich take a piece of fabric and sew on it for a 1 minute do the same for every different stich do this for halve hour, by doing this
your getting the different stiches in order and gear to synchronize
together.
hope this helps.
Stop using the button hole program ! Use the button hole foot but do the stitch by hand adjusted satin stich ! Remember to lock off after each rib sewn !
p. 24 of the pdf covers adjusting the top tension of the machine; you'll have an easier time of gathering if you reduce the top tension about 1-2 number setting.
There isn't an automatic button hole on this machine. You can do it manually. Thread the bobbin thread as usual, but put it through the little hole on the hook in the bobbin case. Set the stitch length between 0 and 1, like a nice satin stich. Set the needle position to the far left and the stitch width to 2. Sew down the left side. Center the needle, set the width to 4 and lower the feed dogs, stitch about 6 stitches across the bottom. Then reverse the direction, set the needle to the right, stitch width to 2 and go back up the right side. Lower the feed dogs again, set a wide stitch and finish the top.
Another good option is to buy a universal presser foot shank from Bernina and then attach an old cam type buttonhole attachment from Singer. They make beautiful buttonholes and you can even do a keyhole button hole.
After putting on the buttonhole foot, you lower the foot, put in the size button you want into the button hole foot. Lower the button hole lever all the way (so machine does not blip) Then the machine automatically sets the length and width of the button hole...you can adjust the length and width manually by pushing the button on the top right hand part of the machine above the LED screen the top one is stich length the other is stich width....if you put the levers to the left it will be the smallest stich length or width...if to the right it will be the largest stich length or width the machine allows. But, really the machine automatically does this for you...so I don't see the need to do it.....but you can....BBill01
Hi,
When doing the button hole....after installing the button hole foot and lowering the foot....and adding the button so the automatic button hole size is determined...you lower the button hole lever it will touch the back of the button hole foot. this holds the button hole foot in the proper position...if this lever is not all the way down...the machine blips at you...check to see that it is down all the way...I hope this helps you..It truly does all that it advertises and is a great machine...BBill01
P.S. you can adjust width and length of the stich also...see instruction manual. pg 28-30
