What To Do If You Find Gas In Your Oil, In Your Riding Mower Engine

As the engine runs, the float inside the carburetor drops opens the float valve, and gas comes pouring in. Fuel flows in, the float rises, and the valve closes. If the valve cannot close, gas keeps flowing, even when the engine is off. This gas can fill the carburetor and drip into the cylinder/s, seep past the rings, and end up in the crankcase with the oil. A little mixing is okay; but oil & gasoline are supposed to be on opposite sides of each piston.

1. The needle and seat are not sealing and fuel is running into the engine and PCV tube filling the crankcase. This can be caused by a worn needle and/or seat or dirt under the inlet needle. It can also be caused by the float having a leak or the pivot pin not allowing it to move freely. You can visually inspect the inlet needle, if it has a groove worn in it, it will need to be replaced. If this doesn't correct it, you may need to replace the seat as well and I recommend you have a shop do this for you. If you find dirt under the inlet needle, you should clean the entire fuel system and replace the filter. You should be able to shake the float and listen if it contains liquid; if so, you will need to replace it. If the float doesn't move freely on the pivot pin, determine what is causing the problem and correct.

You can replace the float inlet and seat, which is normally an inexpensive part or you can install a fuel shut-off valve for when the engine is not running. Make sure you clean the entire fuel system including the tank, filter and lines.

2. If your engine has a fuel pump (as opposed to gravity fed fuel), it is possible the diaphragm has a hole that is allowing fuel to run into the crankcase via the impulse passage (crankcase pulses operate the fuel pump). Be sure to completely drain the crankcase and replace with fresh oil.

Other possible causes could be that the plug in 1 cylinder is not firing, and the gas is not getting burnt and is then mixing with the oil in that piston chamber. The engine will run rough, and the power will seem a lot less than normal.

The piston rings in one of the piston chambers may also be cracked, and you are getting the oil and gas mixing in the chamber and it's not burning all the gas when the plug fires. This would let a lot of gas go out into the oil reservoir and cause this problem.

If the engine stopped running and you can’t restart the next day, you need to pull the spark plugs and take a look at them and see if any of them are coated in oil. Clean the plugs and see if it runs.

If not, then you may have a more serious problem, like the engine block may have a crack. If the engine block is not cracked, most likely the piston rings are worn and are allowing gasoline to seep past the piston into the crankcase.

Engine blocks can get cracked from many different activities:
- hitting an obstruction with the blade
- low or high oil levels putting excessive stress on the block
- thermal shock, or washing down a hot engine with cold water

Gas is getting into the crankcase and diluting the oil/

I have a Robin or as they call it now Subaru engine with this same problem when it stopped the petrol flow into the crankcase. The fuel tap close it when finished and put the engine on TDC then no problem anymore. Check the tap if it REALLY closes as tge only other problem I had was dirt in the carburettor. I cured this with an inline fuel filer

Why do i have oil gushing out of my crankcase vent hose?

Sounds like your piston rings are allowing too much blow-by. This can cause excessive amounts of oil to be forced through the vent hose.

They are either worn or if they have been changed the splits in the rings may be lined up rather than staggered 180 deg.

With that amount of oil I would bet they are worn.

Sugar in a gas Tank

no you have to drop your gas tank clean it out. if you didn't start then just clean gas lines. if you started it then you need a new engine. the sugar gets in the engine and turns to syrup. bad engine.

I justgot a 95 kawasaki 500. i just cleaned the carbs and put in a fuel filter. i put bike back together. there is a black tube running out the back of the bike starting from after the carberatuor an

Its probably the crankcase vent. The carbs have more than likely been pouring gas inside the motor,to the point of overfilling the crankcase oil with gasoline. Drain the oil and change the filter. And while youre draing it,..look inside the carb bodies, and see if gas is still running into the cylinders. If it is,then your float height is not set correctly..(too high)...or the needle valves need to be replaced. (valve that hooks onto the floats).

Have 307 86 gas in oil some pinging not really knocking or ticking. possibly diaphragm on gas pump allowing this through crank case or what should i do

there are only so many ways for gas to get into the oil.one someone purposely pured gas into the crankcase.two the engine is running very rich and not able to burn the excess gas, three the fuel pump is leaking gas into the crankcase, four the oil has not been changed regularly and the gas has thinned out to the point that it cannot seal the engine from the gas that normally is burned in the combustion chamber. If maintenance is regularly performed that fixes #4,I doubt that anyone would pour gas into the crankcase especially at the price of gas that fixes #1,if the carburetor is working as it was designed to then that eliminates running rich and fixes #2.if the above is good then the only thing left the fuel pump, can leak fuel into the crankcase and they won`t make noise necessarily.as far as the slight pinging one of two things can cause this, the engine is running slightly lean and or the timing is too advanced and needs to be reset to specs

GAS TRIMMER WON'T START - BUT ALMOST STARTS WHEN I POUR GAS IN THE SPARK PLUG POCKET, THE GAS THERE DRIES/DISAPPEARS FAST. MUST BE A GAS LINE SITUATION? WHAT SHOULD I DO?

The gas is going into the the crankcase. When the piston goes down it opens the ports and allows the gas to go down untill it could fill the crankcase. Start by blowing compressed air into the spark plug hole and allowing the piston to go to it's lowest position. This will usually remove any liquid gas from the crankcase. Next get yourself a small spray bottle and fill it with the same gas mixture your trimmer uses. Now you can spray a small amount into the spark plug port, replace the spark plug, full choke and pull till it pops. set to half choke and pull. I have also sprayed into the carb but you must open the throttle to allow the gas to enter the combustion chamber. Spray, close throttle, pull choke and pull. You may need to do this a few times for it to start. After it starts let it run at half choke for awhile until it warms a bit then open choke and go to full throttle. If this dosen't work it's possible to have other problems.

Fuel leak

Wait... fuel is pouring out of the crankcase breather? Are you sure it's not the carb overflow tube? The crankcase breather should be going back into your airbox or through some kind of filter. If gas is coming out of there DO NOT START YOUR BIKE. It means that gas has gone from the tank through the carbs into the cylinder and is now in your oil. Thinned out oil is the devil for bikes. Sounds like you'll need to clean the carbs and set the float bowl height and maybe rebuild the petcock. Check to see if any fuel is coming out when the petcock is turned off. If it only has on pri and reserve then check for gas in the vaccum tube.,,
