When I press the button to take a picture it takes a few seconds for the camera to actually take the picture
It's probably acting normal. Every camera (in one of the auto modes) must focus before it takes the image. In low light situations, or low contrast situations (white dog against a white background), many cameras have difficulty finding focus. This causes a delay before the shutter clicks. Try taking your camera out on a nice sunny day and take a pic. If there's no delay, there's your answer. If in a low light situation, click your flash on. That may help a bit to reduce the delay.
Also, check to be sure your timer is off. It should be a little timer clock on front of your camera. If that's on, it will delay the shot several seconds....
You could also try turning off the auto-focus to see if that eliminates the delay.
When this occurs, are the resulting pictures blurry?

SOURCE: Digital Camera Malfunction
mine just started doing the same thing a few weeks ago. I had downloaded pixes to the computer, went outside to take picture and it started acting up. strange lines appear on the screen, but the codes are all there, and you can view the pictures that are on the card. no, the card is not full, the batteries are fine. I think it has a virus built in to start trouble so we will go buy a new one!
SOURCE: I have a Canon Powershot SX100IS.It is the worst
If this is occurring in "Auto" as you say, then the particular camera that you have is defective. If a recent purchase, return it for exchange or refund. If that's not possible, call 1-800-OK-CANON for warranty repair. The SX100 IS actually is a VERY nice camera, and this is very uncommon for a Canon camera. Unfortunately, it sounds like you somehow got one that slipped through the cracks.
SOURCE: How to set self timer and take picture
Press the self-timer button and use arrow buttons to select the delay time, press MENU to confirm. More detail please read the user’s manual on page 68.

SOURCE: when i insert 4gb memory card into canon power
Your new 4GB memory card is the problem. The card would likely be an SDHC card (look on its front cover). Your A540 camera was designed well before the SDHC format came out, and your camera will not recognize it. Your camera can only use standard SD cards (2GB or less). Here's some from Amazon.
SOURCE: Canon lens locks when taking a picture.
Mirror lockup is probably enabled. You can disable it by going into Menu and then Custom Functions. Select Mirror lockup and disable it.
