Obviously check that there is nothing caught in the flight path of the mower deck belt. If it's all clear, remove the mower deck and inspect:
- the blades are clear and mounted properly
- all the pulleys and blade mandrels. Grab each pulley by the edge and try to rock it, then make sure they spin freely
- the mower deck belt for nicks and cuts
I'm pretty sure you'll find the problem in one of these places.
Make sure you get the belt threaded back on correctly - take a picture of it before you remove it if you're not sure how it goes around each pulley.
The bearings in one of the blade houseing r going out
SOURCE: mowing deck makes ticking noise when blades are engaged.
A FEW THINGS TO LOOK AT ARE ,1THE PULLY SHIELDSMAKE SURE THEY AREN'T BENT TO CLOSE TO THE PULLEY'S.2 THE PULLEY BEARING'S MAY BE WORE OUT AND TO BREAK .3LOOK UNDER THE DECK TO MAKE SURE YOU DIDN'T GET SOMETHING TRAPED IN THE CUTTING DECK.HOPE THIS HELPED.
SOURCE: loud screeching noise from mowing deck
A lound screeching is usally a belt problem. Possibly a tension spring has broken for the belt idler. OR there can be a blade bearing that is dry and spalling. In any case the source should identified and corrected asap. That noise is going to cost money and ignoring it can cost even more money. The idler pulley bearing can have also failed.
You can use about a 3 foot section of hose to listen for the source. Just be careful because if you get the hose in a drive pulley it will yank the hose out of your hand. I do NOT recommend sticking your hands in the belt driven parts areas at all.
If you locate the source and need help finding parts we can do that here.
