Hello -- I am staying at a house with a rinnai energy saver heater 1004f and am unfamiliar with gas heaters. An error code 11 keeps flashing and I have gathered from this site that that means its dirty. I dont have access to a manual or anything like that so I was wondering/hoping if someone could give me some more information on the process. Thanks -- b.e.g.
A code 11 also means that it might not be getting any gas. On thr right side of the unit you will find a small door. open it up and make sure the valve is in the open position. If it is, you should contact your gas company to come and diagnose what is going on. The Rinnai is not a do it yourself fix it type of heater.
Just fixed a Code 11 myself and with no help from Rinnai or plumbers.
Pulled the 2 piezo (porcelean) ignitors from the top center of the unit and cleaned them with a bit of sandpaper. Be sure to re-orient the ignitors correctly!
The unit is now working perfectly.
I could not find this information anywhere, just kind of figured it out - good luck.
Thanks for the tip @phcancilla, my unit had three ignitors that were pretty well crusted over. I used a rough emery board to polish them.

Phcancilla is correct. I will explain a bit better. Take front cover off. Toward bottom there are 3 wires going to two plugins behind a clear plastic. All you need is a Phillips and some emery paper. Unscrevthem and I only disconnected the left most single wire. Pull pull it off. Once that metal box cover and plastic are out of way you will see three more acres behind a small tin foil and foam cover. Take them out and slowly you can extract the two sensors from the unit. The left most is a single pole. I pulled that sensor out of the opening and found it all carbon. The other round one had two probes. Mine looked like carbon bb’s on them. Just pulled off the carbon and I sanded every tip a little bit. Note the two prong is Bent a little normally. Reinstall and presto all worked fine.
