A mechanic always checks for compression, spark and fuel pressure first. Then timing and fuel quality. With timed spark, compression and fuel, there should be combustion. Running then becomes a function of the other control systems.

Car starts and runs but in reverse starts shaking SES lights up and blinks. Have changed the plugs but are getting a P0340. It's an 1998 Saturn 112,000 miles. What could it be?

DTC P0340 will set if the PCM voltage on cylinder #4 signal wire is not pulled to ground (cam signal pulse) when:
Diagnostic Aids
Important: A cam pulse missing may not affect engine operation.
?€¢
An open or high resistance on the #1 plug wire or plug will result in DTC P0340 setting.

?€¢
Inspect the EIS towers and plug the wire connections for corrosion or other signs of poor retention at connections.

The electronic ignition (EI) module supplies a signal to the PCM whenever it determines that the #4 cylinder fired on its compression stroke. Because of opposite coil tower polarity, the simultaneous fir of #1 and #4 cylinders are of opposite polarity as well. Under most conditions, except decel, the waste spark cylinder fires before the compression cylinder in sequence. The EI module can determine this polarity sequence and voltage amplitude by using capacitive pickup plates located under the 1/4 coil. If the module senses a positive to negative sequence and high negative spike when #4 is on TDC, it pulls the PCM cam signal to ground signaling that #4 has just fired on compression. This signal along with the double pulse received from the CKP sensor, synchronizes spark and fuel timing.
Beside plugs , plug wires need to be replaced as well !

1997 plymouth voyager , It gives the P0340 code I had the cam sensor and crank sensor replaced. It will start sometimes and will not start for a long period other times I have also replaced the Computer...

Because It that code refers to the circut it could be any thing from an open circuit or bad ground, to a PCM if you have replaced the computer be sure that it was properly flashed or the vehicle wont run, most PCM/TCM/ECM aren't plug and play but if you replaced both sensors this is really all thats left its one of the items listed, I would check grounds that is kind of a popular one on the voyager.

I have a 05 Dodge ram 1500 90,000mi. and it start to bog and eng.light came on my codes were p0129-p0405-p0340-p0868 and pending codes were p0129-p0325-p0330-p0405-p0340. I had put a new map sensor in...

P0340 is for camshaft position sensor circuit malfunction so the problem can be in you hav already changed sensor, then you need to check wiring from sensor to ecu and if the wires are ok than check the ecu! It can be either of them cousing the problem.

P0340 OBD-II Trouble Code
Technical Description
Camshaft Position Sensor Circuit Malfunction

What does that mean? This indicates that a problem was detected in the camshaft position sensor circuit. Since it says circuit, that means the problem could lie in any part of the circuit - the sensor itself, the wiring, or the PCM. Don't just replace the CPS (camshaft position sensor) and think that will definitely fix it.

Symptoms
Symptoms can include:
  • Hard starting or no start
  • Rough running / misfiring
  • Loss of engine power

Causes A code P0340 could mean one or more of the following has happened:
  • a wire or connector in the circuit could be grounded/shorted/broken
  • the camshaft position sensor may have failed
  • the PCM may have failed
  • there exists an open circuit
  • the crankshaft position sensor may have failed

Possible Solutions With a P0340 OBD-II trouble code, diagnosis can be tricky at times. Here are some things to try:
  • Visually inspect all the wiring and connectors in the circuit
  • Check for continuity in the circuit wiring
  • Check the operation (voltage) of the camshaft position sensor
  • Replace the camshaft position sensor as required
  • Check the crankshaft position circuit as well
  • Replace circuit wiring and/or connectors as required
  • Diagnose/replace the PCM as required

Also, the cams/crank are out of alignment, thats why you are getting a cam position code (P0340). For more details about your model, you can visit autozone.com (free register)

Hope helped whit this (remember rated this help) Good luck.

Error code po340 for a 2002 hyundai elantra

Here is what I could find on your P0340 error code:
CausesA code P0340 could mean one or more of the following has happened:
  • a wire or connector in the circuit could be grounded/shorted/broken
  • the camshaft position sensor may have failed
  • the PCM may have failed
  • there exists an open circuit
  • the crankshaft position sensor may have failed
Possible SolutionsWith a P0340 OBD-II trouble code, diagnosis can be tricky at times. Here are some things to try:

  • Replace the camshaft position sensor as required
  • Check the crankshaft position circuit as well

Sounds like since you have replaced both the camshaft and crank shaft sensors you need to look at the PCM.  Go down the line of possible solutions and don't replace the PCM unless nothing else works obviously.  I hope this helps but it looks like you are looking at getting a new PCM.  Good luck.  Thanks for rating my response and for using FixYa!
