How to program extra handset td7896 - Panasonic KX-TD7896 Cordless Phone

Some batteries may require up to 24hour charge cycle before functioning, when the handset is on the base do any lights illuminate?

If you have a working handset I would try charging that on the base unit - you may have a faulty power adapter or cradle, not the battery

Don't "deregister" the one you are not using.
Just go ahead and register the new one.

if the handset is out of battery I'd keep looking. The panasonic KX does not have an emergency battery reserve for finding the phone

A lot depends on what sytsem the 7896 is plugged into. If it happens to be a TA series, you'll go into station programming mode (menu 99) and dial 11. The change this makes is that you will have to dial "9" to get an outside line, or 53x to pick up lines 1,2,3 etc. To get back to idle line preference, dial 12, but a cordless phone should never be set to ILP because you can't call internally or page.

I have the exact same phone and exact same problem. Phone is charged in cradle and green light (indicating full charge) is lit on handset. Opened it up and everything appears clean as a whistle. Did the original poster find a solution? if so, please post it. Thanks.

Probably there is an interference, have you tried changing the channel that these cordless phone is running on?

Did you try this (from the i5801 manual) -

To register a handset to the base, follow these steps:

Step 1: If ENTER BASE ID is displayed on the handset, proceed to the next step; if not, press MENU on the handset, then press ▼ until REGISTER is highlighted; now press OK.

Step 2: Locate the 15-digit Base ID number by pressing, at the base: MENU, then press ▼ until DISPLAY BASE-ID is highlighted, then press OK.

Step 3: Carefully enter this number using the handset dialpad. If you make a mistake, press ‹ to backspace. When finished, press OK.

In a few moments, the handset will be assigned a number (1-6). This will be the lowest available number in the sequence not previously assigned to another system handset.

Step 4: Repeat the procedure for any other unregistered system handsets.

Reply back if you have success. The Base ID is not from the bottom of the base unit, but is something you get by following Step 2 above.

HOLD DOWN the "M" key which is the "*" key in the bottom left for 3 seconds until you hear a beep.  Repeat if you want mute again.

Cancel the old handsets registration at the previous base unit if desired.
For additional handsets, you must register each of them at the new base unit. Only one handset can be registered at a time. A handset will be assigned anextension number at registration.

Make sure the base unit and the other handsets are not being used. Program the same way as the extra handset you bought.

Registration must be completed within 1 minute.
