Merritt 9618 I had removed the tension dial trying to fix a tension problem, now I cannot get it to stay in when I put it back. How do you properly put the tension dial back in on a Singer Merritt 9618?

You will find the parts list most helpful, because it will show you with drawings where each part is supposed to go. Go to the Singer site, and type "parts chart" in the Search box, then select Sewing Machines and the 9 - 900 series. Scroll down; it's towards the bottom.

SOURCE: Singer/merritt 2430 bobbin fill

If you lift up the thread holder, the bobbin holder is inside. Loosen the hand guide to stop the needle from going up and down. Pull the thread around the top thread guide and back into the bobbin holder. Thread the bobbin and move the bobbin over so the guage is "inside" the bobbin. As for the manual, the Singer Merritt 2404 is applicable to the 2430 if that helps.

SOURCE: I have a Singer Merritt 2404 and the tension

You call the shop and tell them what happened.

They should ask you to bring it back in.

Ask if they can fix the machine while you wait.

SOURCE: how do you thread a singer merritt 1872?

Wow, one of the few Singer machines that doesn't have a free download manual. Hmmm..... Ok looked up a photo of your machine. It's pretty easy.

1. raise your presser foot.
2. Put thread on spool pin.
3. draw thread over to and under from behind of the pre-tension disc at top
4. Draw thread down from the right and under the tension dial to seat the thread into the tension discs and flex that spring a little.
5. Through the take up lever.
6. Down through the thread guide.
7. Down through the needle bar thread guide.
8. Through the needle.

Hope that helps.

The tension knob will not turn below four. The thread keeps breaking.

check that the thread is between the plates and not behind them
thread breaking can be from wrong size needle eye, poor quality thread , old thread and needle/ eye timing

Bottom tension is too tight and I have tried all the tricks to fix it with no relief.

Confused. You say it's too loose and then that it's too tight. First thing to try is a brand-new sharp needle. Make sure the presser foot is LIFTED before threading the upper thread. Make sure the threading is through all the guides in the proper order. Be sure to set your upper tension to the mid-point--usually there is a mark on the dial. Then adjust the bobbin tension. Most bobbins have an adjustment screw to loosen or tighten. Righty-tighty, Lefy-loosey. Be sure the bobbin is threaded correctly in the bobbin case and the bobbin is turning in the correct direction. If there is no change, you may need a new bobbin case.

If it was serviced in 2014, it may be time to take it back for its annual.

How to thread singer merritt 3130?

Do you have a manual? If not, you can download one from singerco.com. It sounds like the top tension is too loose. Lowering the presser foot will engage the tension disks. The tension disks are located behind the needle thread tension dial. Slowly lower the presser foot, watching the tension disks press together. The thread passes between the tension disks around from the right, underneath and back up to the take up lever. The manual will tell you the location of these parts.

Underneath stitch bad

Sometimes even though the tension is at recommeded placement, you may find with various fabrics or threads, you have to adjust it. I would try to raise the tension just a bit. Try it a little at a time until you achieve a stitch you are happy with. If adjusting the tension does not correct the problem, double check your threading. If sure it is threaded properly, especially going through the tension assembly...check your thread. I have found that the thread you use can and often does create tension problems. Try changing the thread and see if the stitch quality improves.
