DD WRT is a firmware upgrade sight you can find wonderful firmware upgrades that make your router come to life and Evan worth more than you payed for your original router, check the router database and see if your router is listed and capable for an upgrade to dd wrt, i did it with my dir615 and it gave me a whole host of additional optins for configurations , it was a long search for "dd wrt" but well worth it.
The original firmware does not have this option, but you can get a custom firmware at http://www.dd-wrt.com/
DD-WRT is not supported by linksys, so a little caution there as this could ruin your router if it is not installed properly. Fortuately they have plenty of documentation on installation and troubleshooting if needed.
Here is the owners manual. Starting on Page 16 it gives you details on how to set it up for a network. I do see many reviews online with people stating the extender does not work as advertised. If you continue to have problems, you can utilize a $40 router and install DD-WRT or Tomato to make a $40 router a $400 router! You will first need to establish which model router you have. Then you will (assuming you want to use DD-WRT firmware) need to flash a micro or mini firmware. Then you flash again, using the standard.
There are many users worldwide using your WRT54G and GL routers with other than standard firmware, me included. I manage a network of 9 routers running DD-WRT V23SP2 standard.
Don't give up, and when it says to leave it 30 seconds (or 2 minutes) DO! Be patient...
Second, I too am a dd-wrt user and found a similar problem when using dd-wrt with my IPCOP. You may want to go into the "Security" section of your dd-wrt and disable any fire walling or access-restrictions. Since you are already running zonealarm. Or remove zonealarm if you plan to use dd-wrt as your firewall.
Running multiple firewalls will slow down your network/Internet traffic.
Linksys WRT54GL with DD-WRT firmware. Now, DD-WRT will void the warranty, but it has been incredible for my uses when configuring WDS. A the WRT54GS has also been said to be an excellent router, but I cannot say.
