Probably bad batteries.You need to explain it more otherwise nobody would know what type of problem it really is. Maybe say if you have charged it or anything useful:)

Most of these sort of things work in a similar way to mobility scooters, cordless drills, etc.
The motor is generally a dc permanent magnet motor that will run in either direction depending on the polarity of the connections to it. Reversing the polarity and therefore the direction of rotation is accomplished by a switch - with a cordless drill the switch is a manual mechanical switch while a mobility scooter the task is accomplished by relay(s) and semiconductor devices on the circuit board depending on which part is energised by the handlebar control.
I expect your kid's quad bike is similar in principle. In my limited experience the quality of the internal circuitry, the wiring, connections and switching is usually well below what it should be - if you are lucky, you will find a wire has fallen off but the problem could be more complex.
Did you check if there is still enough fluid in the battery chambers?
Don't trow in normal water, because the battery will not appreciate. Just demineralised water will do.
Sounds like overheating alright. How is the weather? If its over 80 it might only be that. If it is cooler, then if you are running the recommended volt/amp battery pack you may have a bad temp sensor on your control board. If you are using a higher powered battery to boost speed then you will have to cool the motor or get a more powerful one that can take the load. I do not have that mode bikel, so I can not say if it is a common problem, It is not a problem with my 24 volt Lafree.
Sounds as if you messed some wiring up! For FYI in the future never lay a motorbike or any type of cycle down unless it fell or by accident cause it was not made to be laid on its side, but straight up only! The wiring harness by the front and under the seat(If it has them in that model) needes to be checked! Take it to the dealer or a trusted mechanic ASAP!
