May be the flex cable that connects the home button to the motherboard is damaged. This part is cheap and easy to install.
You can find a replacement here:

Something like that would probably be solved at the genius bar at an apple store. assuming it has a warranty. even if it doesn't, try anyway. they can be lenient sometimes

My i phone is not responding to my touch to unlock it so i can get in my phone

Unlock:

Plug it into iTunes with it at the unlock screen. Somewhere it should say "Unlock your iPhone" or something like that in iTunes. Click it. Otherwise do a restore by going to the screen where it shows how much memory you have used up in iTunes and click restore.

Download the latest iTunes to your computer and reset the iPhone. Then re-sync it.

Reset

To reset iPhone, press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least 10 seconds. During this time, a red "power off" slider may appear and the screen may go black, but do not release Sleep/Wake and Home buttons until the Apple logo appears.

If iPhone won't turn on, or the display freezes or doesn't respond

  1. Press and hold the Home button for at least six seconds, until the application you were using quits.
  2. If that doesn't work, turn iPhone off and turn it on again. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button on top of iPhone for a 10 seconds until a red slider appears, and then slide the slider. Then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.
  3. If that doesn't work, reset iPhone. Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button and the Home button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears

More resets:

Try This:
1. Remove Sim Card
2. Hold in 'Home' button and 'On/Off' button together until Apple logo appears
3. Replace Sim Card
4. Hold in 'Home' button and 'On/Off' button together until normal phone screen appears.

Also, Try this:
1.) Shut down the iPhone 3G.
2.) Start up iTunes
3.) Hold down HOME button on the iPhone 3G
4.) While keeping the HOME button depressed, plug in the Sync cable
5.) A message will pop up to ask if you want to reset.
6.) Just click YES and the reset process should start.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it and give a testimonial for my response. Happy Holidays!

2. Instead of dragging the red slider, press and hold the Home button for six seconds.

If still the problem persist you have to update the firmware:

Updating and Restoring iPhone Software

You can use iTunes to update or restore iPhone software. You should always update iPhone to use the latest software. You can also restore the software, which returns iPhone to its original state.

If you restore, all data is erased from iPhone, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, calendar information, and any other data. All iPhone settings are restored to their original state.

1. Make sure you have an Internet connection and have installed the latest version of iTunes from www.apple.com/itunes.
2. Connect iPhone to your computer.
3. In iTunes, select iPhone in the Source pane and click the Summary tab.
4. Click “Check for Update.” iTunes tells you if there’s a newer version of the iPhone software available.
5. Click Update to install the latest version of the software. Or click Restore to restore iPhone to its original settings and erase all data on iPhone. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the restore process.

Lock up after trying to install 3.0

There are a lot of suggested solutions on different forums for the 1604 (including on the Apple support site) - most blame a faulty / corrupted itunes and suggest reinstalling, or blame the USB port you're using and suggest either trying a different port (ideally at the back of your HD) or different computer. None of those things worked for me when it happened to me. My issue was that the 'preparing to restore' phase of restoration became looped and eventually it crashed citing error 1604.

However, there was a solution at: http://daggle.com/iphone-upgrade-fail-701 which did work for me.

For convenience:

1. Start the restore process (whatever way you can).

2. When it seems to be stuck in the loop (and possibly your iPhone just shows a blank screen) use CTRL+ALT+DEL and end task to kill the iTunes application.

3. Restart the restore process.
