sounds like the carbon brushes need replacing in the motor, they can cause a screeching sound as they wear down.

SOURCE: burning rubber smell

Even though manufacturers' love to advertise it, I personally would not load "too many items", as it may cause excessive normal ware and tear on your machine parts, motor, belt, etc.

Yes; the smell can be the belt and possibly your motor as well. The motor may be spinning, but the weight may be too much when the belt is engaging to rotate the drum. I would be careful not to burn the motor (About $120 - part only)

You should be able to access and inspect the drive-belt in the rear of the machine by removing an access panel (back of washer).

To replace the belt if fairly simple. Remove and re-install by wedging a long screw driver in between the belt and metal pulley (circular), while simultaneously rotating the pulley.

You may be required to make a belt repair if you start to have problems with your "washer not spinning" or "making a noise/not spinning"

SOURCE: washer squeals at end of spin cycle

The manufacturer recommends you tilt back the washer and spray some penetrating oil into and around the brake package to stop the squeal.

Maytag legacy series washer

The drive motor which spins the drum is connected to the drum by a rubber belt. Sounds like the belt is burned through. Make sure you can spin the inside tub by hand to verify that the tub can turn freely before you replace the belt. The hum is from the drive motor just spinning freely.

Maytag Performa, Noisey spin cycle, now does not work

the belt may be old and stretched/slipping...if it is stretched and slipping it will cause the squealing .............otherwise, check the pulley for the belt/motor to see if it is okay and the motor itself copuld be worn out if the belt looks ok............be careful, you can get zapped if you touch a wire and also if the motor is burned up it can cause a fire so watch carefully and you should be able to see which of these possibilities are the problem..............

We have a whirlpool duet washing machine that is about 7 years old. During trhe spin cycle it makes a loud noise. Not the typical "airplane noise." There is also an odor. A burning engine odor. If you...

The rubber belt is worn and slipping under load. (like a fan belt)
There could also be something caught in the belt or pulleys; clear it out and it should work.
If worn, replace belt soon...

Hope this helps!

Performa washing machine not spinning

you will most probably find that the inside of the belt that runs on the pulley has been breaking away bit by bit and if the pulley stops where there is a bit missing it may not turn when the pulley starts to turn.
Just a thought as it has happened to me a few times
The odor is most probably burning rubber as the pulley spins on the belt
