Well you forgot this pesky thing called drive formats
and ownership rules for files or folders.
the drive came new with NTFS format that is MS only and fails on MAC. take the drive back to the PC running windows and erase all you want.
apple does not PAY MS the license fees to use NTFS is why....
if lost the PC, windows , to work on... we...
then format the drive to extFAT so both windows and mac can use this drive.

The problem is because Mac cannot write to NTFS formatted drives. You will have to reformat the drive in Mac. You will loose all the data :( Here is a link for the how to:

If he only wants to use HP pocket drive with the MAC, then he needs to format the pocket drive with the MAC notebook.
If he wants to exchange files between the MAC and a PC, then he needs to format the pocket drive with a PC. The pocket drive needs to be formatted in FAT32.
A MAC will then be able to read and copy PC files in FAT32 format.
