Try the steps below to fix the issue:
1. Browse to Start -> Run... and type in NET STOP SPOOLER (this will stop the
print spooler service) 2. Browse to your windows\system32\spool\PRINTERS\
folder. You should see files there ending in .SPL and .SHD created around the
time you tried to print - delete these files. 3. Browse to Start -> Run... and type in NET START SPOOLER (this will restart the
print spooler service) 4. Double click the printer icon in the lower-right
corner of your taskbar to examine your print job queue and browse to View ->
Refresh. Try to print a document again to verify that the problem is fixed.

Make sure that your printer firmware code is updated. Please visit the Lexmark website to download and install the Lexmark S400 Series Firmware Update. If more than one download is listed for your model, choose the first
download in the list. If it is the wrong firmware level, an error message will
tell you which firmware level is correct. The firmware update addresses the problem you mention - printer having trouble recognizing the cartridges and it will help improve your printer's overall performance.
Should the problem continue even after updating your printer, it would be best to contact Lexmark technical support center for additional assistance.

The 100/100XL cartridges are not licensed to be refilled. You can, however, refill the 100A or 100XLA cartridges available on the Lexmark website at http://www.lexmark.com. You should be aware that a refilled cartridge will not be able to report its ink level, and you might not get the print quality you expect from ink that is specially formulated by Lexmark to pass through microscopic nozzles at extremely high temperatures.
