The system has a Core2 Quad Q9550, 8 GB RAM, 160 GB Intel SSD, 750GB HD, DVD/RW. Windows 7 installed on the SSD. I have the Windows 7 DVD. The system used to be rock solid, but after some software or driver installation (not sure which one) now crashes 1-3x per day.
George, your problem may be a fragmented drive...
you need to run a defrag and scan disk.
it's done the same way in Windows 7 as it was in earlier versions of Windows:
If this does not help, you need to run a Recovery from the disk you created when you setup the PC.
If you did not create the Recovery Disk...go to all programs, HP folder, Utilities. Create Recovery Disk.

You need to call or visit hp.com and see if the video drivers support Windows 7.
If you have bought an indepentant video card ( a video card that DID NOT come with the computer), then call the manufacturer of the card or visit the vendor's website and ask for/search for any Drivers that support Windows 7.
If none of these Ideas work, you may need to replace your video card with a Windows 7 compliant video card.
Hope this helps
SOURCE: How to install new hard drive
Hi Mark,
External drives have come a long way and run almost as fast as many
internal drives. If your need for extra hard drive space is pretty
much driven by the Microsoft Flight Simulator game, you could get by
with using an external drive. A few things, though: Make sure your
system is supporting USB 2.0 (it should be) and that the drive runs at
least 5400rpm. External HDD's run off standard 120v AC power.
Otherwise, if you want to get an internal drive, you can certainly get
another ATA-133 drive. But SATA is faster and your computer may
support it. The D530 CMT (convertible mini-tower) definitely does. But
there is also the D530 SFF (small form factor), and D530 USD (ultra
slim desktop)--not sure if those are rigged for SATA support.
As for maximum hard disk size supported, that's up to the operating system (e.g. Windows XP vs. Vista). You likely won't need any bios updates because of a new hard drive installation. However, its not a bad idea to review the BIOS update release notes to see what they're addressing.

Not compatible or not working well with windows 7?
(making a program work with windows 7)
Maybe, It doesn't work because the driver/application you installed is
for other versions of operating system. I am also using windows 7 like
you so don't you worry, You can still use your old installer/driver from
other versions of operating systems. Just remember that before
installing any program in a windows 7 Operating System Computer, Use
"troubleshoot compatibility". Right Click the Icon of your program
installer/application first, then choose "troubleshoot compatibility". This will
allow you to choose on what type operating system your program will run.
Just reply back if it still doesn't work.:D rate and vote for me:))

I doubt, due to no support from Microsoft, anyone still supports XP. The nearest drivers I can find are Vista32 bit drivers.
Have fun and good luck.
How about Win2000 drivers, they are very similar?
