I opened the plate to wind a bobbin. I lined up the arrows on the machine bed and the plate when you do this you still have about a 1/4 inch gap between the plate and the needle plate. The bobbin is loaded, I pulled out 4 inches of thread, cut it and now the plate will now close so that I can sew. How do I get it to close. Even when I remove the bobbin I can not get it to shut all the way. What am I doing wrong? It was closed before I opened it to change the bobbin.
When you wind your bobbin the center metal tip in the bobbin causes the bobbin to raise or lower. If you press on the center tip, you'll see that it is actually a spring that goes up and down. It sounds to me like that metal tip is stuck down in the bobbin winding position, which is not allowing the bobbin to settle down all the way! You might also check to make sure that your needle is at the highest point, and you have selected #2--the straight stitch. I learned all this from the instruction manual on page 14; it is available as a free download from the singer sewing machine site, and if you don't have one I would recommend that you get it--it's most helpful.

The nylon timing gear may have broken up or the top gear amy have broken up, you need to get into the top and have a lokk and also under the bobbin case area in the bottom of the machine, iof thge gears have broken you can buy the gears quite cheaply and fit them yourself, I do have full instructions to retime the machine.

Try inserting the bobbin in the reverse direction. Most machines take a bobbin clockwise or counterclockwise and it can make a difference. Also try a new needle, a bad needle is often the problem believe it or not.

If you turn the handwheel, can you see a metal ring rotating around the outer edge of the bobbin case? If not rotating, broken gear or timing belt off.
If that ring is turning, remove the needle plate and bobbin case. As this ring now rotates, you will a finger on the ring that will pass behind the needle from right to left and it should catch the thread from the eye of the needle. If this finger, the "hook" passes above the eye, you have a timing problem.
Let me know.
