Being in airplane mode doesn't prevent it from switching off. All "airplane mode" does is keep you form accessing an internet connection. I just tried turning mine off in airplane mode and mine shut off fine.
How are you turning your device off? Are you using the touch screen or the power button on the top/side? If you're using the button on the top/ side, it's quite difficult to get it to turn off or even adjust the volume. (I think these buttons are useless and that they are design flaw.)
Try going up to the top right hand corner, with the device on, and touch the battery icon. It should then give you a choice between "standby", "turn off" or "restart". Other than that, I don't really know what to tell you. It's probably a good thing that you sent that one back!

Cheers and good luck, Jamie

SOURCE: I want to sinc my Blackberry Playbook to my Windows 7

You need the Blackberry Desktop software installed on the computer to synch your data, music, and video on the Playbook to that on the PC. This software is available here: https://swdownloads.blackberry.com/Downloads/browseSoftware.do;jsessionid=F3B0494BF2ABF9E47D9531B30BD6E7BF.node1 . The direct link to the multi-language version of the software is: https://swdownloads.blackberry.com/Downloads/contactFormPreload.do?code=A8BAA56554F96369AB93E4F3BB068C22&dl=A2C0D61EB187AB3AFD247A852FAD3647 .

If the above links do not work, start here: http://us.blackberry.com/support/apps-and-software/desktop-pc.html and click on the Downloads for Blackberry Desktop Software. Then use the drop-down menu to select Blackberry Desktop Software Windows OS. Then download the .exe. Below you will find individual language versions. Install the software (in Win7 you need to be the Administrator).

Enable Bluetooth on the computer and pair the computer to the Blackberry.
See http://docs.blackberry.com/en/smartphone_users/deliverables/43033/1196187.jsp for more information.

Next click on Device -> Device Options and go to the General tab. Then set the "When I connect my device" items for those you want to have synchronized.

I hope this helps.

Standard troubleshooting should always be performed and logs should be submitted for review prior to reloading device software.
Only proceed with reloading the device software to the BlackBerry 10 smartphone or BlackBerry PlayBook tablet if instructed by BlackBerry Technical Support Services or as directed by another BlackBerry Knowledge Base (KB) article.
Warning: The following procedure will delete all data and applications on the BlackBerry device. If possible, back up the data prior to performing the procedure. For information on how to back up data from the BlackBerry 10 smartphone or BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, see KB33526.
Before proceeding, download and install (or update to) the latest version of BlackBerry Link found at www.blackberry.com/blackberrylink.
To reload the BlackBerry 10 OS or BlackBerry PlayBook OS, complete the following steps:
BlackBerry Link version 1.2.3.23 (Windows):
  1. Open BlackBerry Link.
  2. Ensure the computer is connected to the Internet.
  3. Power off the BlackBerry 10 smartphone or BlackBerry PlayBook tablet.
  4. Connect the device to the computer via the USB cable.
  5. Under the Devices heading, click the device name when it is displayed.
  6. Click Preferences at the top-right.
  7. On the left, click Reload Device Software.
  8. Click the Reload button.
  9. Click OK to confirm.
BlackBerry Link version 1.2.1.10 (Mac OS):
  1. Open BlackBerry Link.
  2. Ensure the computer is connected to the Internet.
  3. Power off the BlackBerry 10 smartphone or BlackBerry PlayBook tablet.
  4. Connect the device to the computer.
  5. Click the device name when it is displayed on the left.
  6. Click the Reload button.
Note: If the device is not detected by BlackBerry Link, at the top of the screen in the menu bar, click BlackBerry Link > Preferences > Reload to complete the reload.

How to connect blackberry playbook to desktop running on windows

Hi,Friends...
You can connect blackberry to desktop. no any issue flow instruction.>

Note: Make sure you have the BlackBerry Desktop Software/ Device Manager installed first. Before you continue. Well, it didn't take me long to figure out the issue. All you have to do is unplug the Playbook, go to your Settings > Storage & Sharing (Make sure "File Sharing" is switched to "ON) > Switch "Wi-Fi Sharing to "OFF" > Select "Connect to Windows" under "USB Connections" drop menu. Go back to your BB Desktop Software. Go to, Tools > Refresh iTunes Album Art. (Note: It can take a few minutes depending iTunes Library size) Plug your BlackBerry Playbook back to your PC through the USB connection, wait for it to load and you should be able to Sync your Files. Thanks

When setting up blackberry playbook for first time. it wont let me select a country on the agreement page

The Playbook attempts to download the license agreement from http://csbeta.websl.eval.blackberry.com/
and it seems this URL is no longer valid, as it returns
"Sorry! Nothing could be found here."

i figured the OS on my playbook is an early release so i'll be forcing an update.

to force an update, i fired up the latest desktop manager, completely turned off the playbook by pressing/holding the power button then clicking turn off, then i plugged it in..
desktop manager then shows an error message and gives you the option to update.. click that and leave it alone for an hour++ (depending on your internet connection)

i started the updated playbook, went through the setup wizard and this time when i selected the country, i got the license agreement and was able to continue.

Just purchased Blackberry Playbook. Set up wifi. Followed instructions on screen & set up account. Accepted agreement. Next screen went to update. Update finished & said it was restarting. ...

Sounds like a bad install on the new operating system. Since your question was posted in April, I'm assuming you have the problem solved by now, or returned the device, but for anyone else looking at this, I suggest either returning the device and exchanging it, or if you prefer to solve it with this device, then leave it on and let the battery run down. Once it is dead, try plugging the device in and powering it on, hopefully that gets you back in business. Blackberry Tech Support is also helpful, their phone number for your country should be on their website.
