My National Geographic Weather Station is the opposite. The outside sensor only indicates the temperature, but the single CR2023 battery lasts a year. The inside unit on my desk lasts around 5 - 6 months and lets me know if needs a battery by showing the outside temperature as ' -- '
Although the manual says 'rechargeable batteries are not recommended', I would try 4 Sanyo Eneloop batteries. Or you could contact Acurite Support and ask them if your battery use is excessive?
There are a couple of possibilities for the failure to transmit/receive outdoor data. First, resynch the two units. This will depend on the manufacturer. For some brands, you need to take the batteries out of both the indoor and outdoor units for 10 minutes. Then put the batteries into the devices with both side by side (working inside is easier). Wait until the outdoor data is displayed. There are some weather station systems where the outdoor unit isn't weather-proof. You may need to dry the outdoor unit for several days after removing the batteries before resynching it to indoor sensor.
If the data displays properly when the outdoor unit is inside, you may have the outdoor sensor too far away from the indoor unit. (The distance will depend on the number of walls and the composition of the wall studs/siding.) Try keeping the two units closer together.
If the outdoor data isn't displayed when the two units are side by side and the reset procedure doesn't work. One device has an internal malfunction (transmitter or receiver failed). It's probably best to replace the unit. If it is under warranty, contact the manufacturer.
I hope this helps. For specific details on resetting the indoor and outdoor units to synch them, please add a comment with the make/model of your weather station.

(I've seen Davis Weather stations damaged by a close lightning strike. The outdoor unit had to be replaced.)
Bring the outdoor sensor indoors. Take the batteries out of the sensor and out of the main unit. Wait 10 minutes. Put the batteries back in the outdoor sensor. Put the batteries back in the main unit. DO NOT PRESS ANY BUTTONS. Wait 10 minutes or until the outdoor temperature shows. Once the temperature shows you may use the buttons to set the clock, etc. If it does not show after 10 minutes, then try again.
