Engine ran fine when parked, started the problem the following day when started, does not smoke and no prior notice of a problem
Bad plug, ignition wire, valve clearance, or valve damage, vacuum leak at manifold. Timing cam off / damaged

ALWAYS CHECK THE POINTS!!! 20 years operating this engine and you'd think I would know better. The points were severely pitted. Spec said .020 but actual is .013. The cold weather had me suspecting a carb problem. DOH!

Sounds like engine is flodding. Have carb float checked, make sure it is at the correct height

The woodruff / flywheel key is likely partially sheared. Pull off the air housing, remove the starting clutch, to get to where you can see the flywheel key. I bet you will find that the key has distorted. Easily replaced once flywheel is pulled. Make sure to use the correct key when replacing it.

kohler pro 18 on craftsman riding mower. Idles fine but lacks power at high speed. i installed a new carb. does not seem like it is not opening up full throttle and will back fire if i accelerate the throttle too fast.
