Have tried all settings unable to get any sound, volume shows when changes are made. No sound at any choice made. These steps were made to a Crosley Director CR Recorder CR246. One week it was working, the next it was not. My Mother is the only that uses the machine.(as far as we know) I turned the Recorder on (took it off standby) tried to play a record. The record played with music sounding. it did not indicate recording mode. There was a CD in the machine. So I tried to play the CD, still no sound. The instruction manual that can with the machine was of little help, however; I did try the radio as well. Still no sound.
I am wondering if you were ever successful in getting any sound? My unit is doing the same thing, but it has been since I plugged my phone in the line-in jack. Everything is powered, but no sound and I called Crosley and it is a discontinued model. There is no phono/line switch and if there was, I believe my problem would be solved. Thank you, if you get this and answer what your results were!

Your laser is on it's way out. You can try some service diagnostics but it's likely you need a new laser.
SOURCE: Lost the manual, can't get hooked up
You need to use an audio CDr, data or computer CDr's will not work in this machine. I don't know this specific machine, but usually you select the input, then 'rec type' eg manual,1 track or 1 disc, then press record to get into record pause, start your source, then press play on the unit to start recording. To finalize, you press finalize then either the play or rec button to start the finalize process.

Hi,
Can you skip tracks?
If you can and the sound stops it is posible that the tracking alignment it out.
If you can't skip forward, it could be that the pick-up is sticking.
This could be on the guide rail or the gears.
Some times the sledge motor gear splits on the shaft.
I suggest you take it to a service centre.

When done the machine turns off automatically, and you turn it onagain. Every time mine has stopped working this has fixed it. This might work with yours as well.
Formatting the Data Partition
The data partition on the ScreenPlay Director is formatted with an NTFS file system and will appear as a read-only volume under Mac OS X unless special software is installed on the Mac. If you need to transfer files to the ScreenPlay Director by direct USB connection on a Mac, you must reformat the data partition to FAT32 (see instructions below).
NOTE: On a network connection, Mac OS will see the ScreenPlay Director as a shared SMB volume. This means you can use the network to copy files from a Mac to the ScreenPlay Director without changing the format from NTFS to FAT32. (Recommended if available.)
If you reformat the ScreenPlay Director data partition for use with a Windows PC, it is recommended that you use the Windows format utility to reformat with NTFS. Right click on the drive letter for the data partition and select Format.
CAUTION!
Do NOT change the partitioning on the ScreenPlay Director as this will remove the firmware that enables the ScreenPlay Director to communicate with your TV set. Only media files stored on the active data partition can be viewed or played on a TV.
Formatting the data partition will erase all existing data! If you have files on the ScreenPlay Director you want to save, move them to another drive or volume before reformatting.

Honestly, the only way to fix is to open it up and have a look. Probably a broken wire ore bad switch. Really no way to really know until you open it up...
