Could be either a bad battery or the alternator not charging causing a low battery. Volt meter on good battery should read at 12 or a little more just sitting with motor off and about 13 to 14.5 volts while bike running at the proper rpms.

The 2001 model had a problem with the left compartment. In your main trunk you will find on the left and right side a black button insert, pop it out and with your finger you can push the mechanism down, this will open the compartment. I had to tear into the locking mechanism and shortened a new rod to cure my problem, hope you don't have to go to this extent to cure your problem

Pull the license plate cover off. the tail light harness is on the left side. Honda sells a pigtail that connects to it.
