Tip: Prevent a Smelly Washer With Powdered Dishwasher Detergent

I have a great tip for making a smelly clothes washer smell fresh and clean, given to me by a Maytag repairman. Simply run dishwasher detergent powder, not liquid, through your machine with no clothing in it, about once or twice a month.
It works and it is cheaper than the specialized products that do the same thing. Use the same amount you would use of laundry detergent for your particular machine.

Hello, Do you use liquid detergent, if yes,then this is the most likely the problem as there is chlorine bleaching agent in liquid powder and it has a tendency to leave the machine smelly after a while.
The cure is to do a "maintenance wash" (a biol water with no clothes or detergent in), once per month preferable twice.

put some bleach in the washer and run a rince wash (nothing in the washer) then run 3 more rince washes to clear out all traces of bleach before you put any closes in it,(or do a hot white wash only) this should work ok, when not in use all ways leave the door open if you can to change the air inside your washer it stops them smelling

this might be coming from the rubber door seal clean it all the way round make sure holes at bottom are not blocked and the rubber door seal is all clean. also clean the draw so there is no power left in there and it is all clean. also a good thing to do is run it though a cleaning cycle with normal detergent at max temperature that the machine can do. hope this helps.

I have this problem with my Siemens machine, it is due to mainly running low temp washes and bateria building up in the hoses etc. (more prevalent if the machine is connected directly to the sink and not on a stand pipe). I run a 90 degree cycle every 4 weeks with the machine empty except for two capfuls of baby sterilisng fluid (approx half a mug) I buy stores own as it is cheaper than miltons. The first time I did mine I ran the cycle twice to be sure it was cleared out. My machine is six years old and the first smelly signs were when it was about a year old, I run the maintenance wash religiously ever 4 weeks and run a machine descaler such as oust thru every 4-6 months. You don't neeed to remove anything Just set it to large load hot water and add 2 cups of bleach. Run it through 2 cycles. If the smell is still not gone completely repeat.

Run a wash cycle with only some bleach in it. That works for us everytime ours gets a bit stinky... Good luck!
