Check the batteries with a voltmeter. Inspect the wiring for loose connecions or broken solder joints. Check the switch with a continuity tester.

I have a Dyson handheld which i gave a thorough clean out using an air compressor. Since doing so it does not work at all! I have only had it a few months (second hand) but was like brand new.
That is why it was second hand....the first owner had a problem and passed it on to you.. Needs factory attention.
