Since you know the coils are good, there is only a few possibilities. The grounding wire must be causing a short to ground. Remove the ground wire from the coil. Check your spark plugs, are you swapping these too? The gap on the coil, this is a long shot, but if it is too far away, it will not fire. Are looking at the spark form the plugs? By firing you mean running, or spark. If you mean by running, check the compression. You may have a stuck valve, usually the exhaust.
You need a new alternator , Check your amps coming out of the back of your altenator you will find it is not sending 14 volts when its running. The reason it starts and runs for a bit after it sits or charges is that the car is running on the battery if you keep this up you will not only need a new altenator but a new battery
11 miles on full charged new batteries, this is approximately as condition change max distance, like you weight, if you are going uphill, how even the ground is etc. if you need more you could get a spare battery pack for it, and swap them over when needed. but remember to keep them charged even when not in use once a week is the best way to keep them in good shape.
Your alternator may be overcharging & causing major electrical problems! If your battery is bubbling then it cant be good. Check the voltage output @ diferent RPMs. Also check for cut or shorted wires! Also check that the battery indicator bulb isnt burnt out
