My Pronto M51 Sure Step Power wheel chair is indicating error code 9. What can I do to fix this problem?
Error Code 9 is a "Communications Error". The controller, or "Little black box" down inside the chair is not talking to the joystick, etc. First, check all the connections. Unplug, examine and clean all of the connections going into the controller, and the joystick connection too. Inspect all of the cables for damage to the wiring. If all looks good, then you likely have a bad controller....ouch. These are very expensive to replace new. You might be able to find a used one on Ebay, etc., or you could be better off looking on sites like Craigslist for a complete powerchair replacement. I have found near-new chairs for under a thousand dollars. Search for Pride Jazzy chairs too...a lot more of those for sale than Invacare chairs. Good luck.

If it is coming from your motors, it could be very bad. i.e. motor replacement. Sometimes on the side of those motors there is a black plastic cap about the size of a quarter or half dollar, those fall out sometimes and allow gearbox grease to come out. This should`nt be confused with your motor brush caps which are about the size of a pea and have a small **** in them for a screwdriver.DO NOT TAKE THESE OUT. If the large cap has come out just stick it back in. If you can`t find it you`ll ned to call a dealer to get the part replaced. If you can still find no prob, your probably going to have to go to a dealer.
SOURCE: only 1 battery charges
The lights are working, the batteries aren't. Red indicates power to the charger, and it should be on all the time. Green indicates a full charge, usually. If one or both of the batteries are totally dead, then the charger can't "see" them, and you will get a green light, but you will have dead batteries.
All power chairs use sealed, deep-cycle batteries. Deep cycle batteries, are designed for slow amperage dischare over a long time period, unlike a car battery that throws out a lot of amperage for turning the motor over. That's called "cold-cranking amps", and you can load-test a car battery to see if it will throw out a ton of amps for long enough to start a car. There is NO load tester made, or possible for a deep-cycle battery. A load test requires a 24-hour time period, and a complicated formula.
So, your course is to get some fresh, gel-sealed-batteries. You will need type U-1. Specify, gel-sealed-batteries when you go to the battery shop. A fresh set should get the chair up to about 12-16 mile range, which would be about 3-4 hours running constantly at high speed. Good luck.

Have the batteries load tested. It sounds like the batteries need to be replaced.

The 9 flash error code indicates a communications fault. The communication fault relates to the communication between the joystick and the control module. The joystick on the arm mount is connected to the control module in the base. When there is a break in the wiring of this wiring harness, also called a bus cable, a fault occurs. This trips the computer and the computer sends out a flash code to the joystick. Simply stated there is a broken or pinched wire between the joystick and controller. Look physically at the wire and check for cuts, breaks or pinches. The best short term repair is to repair the broken wire with solder and heat shrink or tape. You can also use **** splice connectors and tape. The best long term repair is to replace the harness with a part available from Invacare. The most definitive way to diagnose this problem is to read the fault log of the controller using a hand held programmer available to dealers and certified technicians. The number and type of fault codes logged in the controller is another indicator of which
component(s) has failed. Hope this helps.
